Kyle Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Does anyone have any recipes for some stoneflys? I am especially interestred in ones that are hot on the current river.
Members tinner Posted June 23, 2009 Members Posted June 23, 2009 Here's one that is deadly from Brian Wise's page. http://flyfishingtheozarks.com/blog/?page_id=42. I need more practice on it. I can't get the legs right but I'm a novice at fly tying. There is another on called the CR Gold which is also good. I don't know of a recipe page but if you're close to STL Hargroves has both. Hope this helps.
3wt Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Gotta say that I don't see a whole lot of stoneflies on the current - just an occasional big yellow one fluttering by itself. If stonefly patterns are hot on the current river, it's news to me (and I'd be interested in what pattern and when.) I have heard of people (myself included) having luck with stimulators, which are more of an attractor than a stonefly. They also work well for trailing a nymph off of the hook bend - I think there's a pattern here, or you can get it anywhere, and you can play with colors all you want.
Gavin Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Golden stones are the most common on the Current, and there are some blacks but not many...Nothing like the NFoW....Dick Ryan's CR Gold is a good pattern when fish are eating goldens, so is an amber colored hare's ear, or a Pat's Rubberlegs (see link in previous post) with gold brown chenille with brown or gold legs. Cheers.
fishinwrench Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 a big gangly-legged stonefly nymph tumbling along the bottom at the tailend of a riffle is just something yummy to eat and easy for the fish to notice in fast turbulent areas....I don't think it matters that a fish has never seen or tasted the real thing before.
Members crawfly Posted June 23, 2009 Members Posted June 23, 2009 I never fished the current but I used to fish NFofW quite a bit. The front fly on my tandem was always a casual dress. Great fly that I bet few fish anymore. I used to buy whole muskrat skins (green stretched) from a place in Hurley for CHEAP after his buyers came in generally. One skin I bleached, for golden stone patterns and I dyed one dark brown for the big blacks. Simple fly, simple tie, my kind of recipe. Here's a link to the pattern right off the skin. I bet it'd work for the Current. http://www.flytyingforum.com/pattern8510.html
Brian Wise Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Hey Crawfly, I have heard of the Casual Dress in the past but never saw a photo of it. Will for sure have to try it out on the NFOW soon. Thanks! Brian My Youtube Channel

Since you're right on top of the river, try a fore & aft (peacock&gris) or renegade(peacock&brown) as the point fly of a brace of flies. Lemme know if there is a preference still. The browns were always more casual. Like at a 95% rate! Good fishin' on ya!
