loo10 Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 There are some bass jigs, frog baits, etc out now that have a coffee flavor. So SOMEBODY thinks coffee would attract a fish. Use at your own risk....Michael has tried to warn you. DoveTail Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 "...or other food substance..." Maybe you could argue your way out of it, but unless MDC says specifically it would be OK, I ain't buyin'... For me, I'm seeing it as a food substance even though it isn't listed specifically. I can find some foam to look like it and I won't have to worry about explaining it to a judge.
Zack Hoyt Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I agree with the fact it is scented. Could you use corn if there was epoxy all over it? I try to err on the side of caution with such things. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Leonard Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 well here.. if the glue and epoxy covers the scent of the coffee bean... why dont we get someone to do this.. take 1/8oz little baggie of pot (aka.. mary jane).. roll it up really tight and put glue and/or epoxy and get really good and covered... walk past a K-9 Unit.. and it the dog doesnt smell it.. then we all know it covers the scent.... RIGHT.. even though I seen this fly.. and Ive seen it work.. (Nice fly Brian).. But I have to agree with Micheal on this one.... this would be like tying a piece of corn on a hook and fishing it.. even though it is a natural scent... There is no way glue would cover the the scent 100%.. Just my thoughts. Leonard http://www.taneycomonights.com
back2roots Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 OR...when in doubt.....make the old standard buck-tail version. size 16 scud hook 3-4 peacock herls wrapped for the body and short legs 1/4" -1/2" thick bunch of black bucktail pulled forward for the wingcasing. Cut a few strands of hair loose from the back end for longer legs. Put some Sally Hansen's on the back for gloss and longevity. Go fishing... Blessings All! Bill If you liked the sound....Thank the engineer!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 27, 2009 Root Admin Posted July 27, 2009 Still don't buy it. Comparison to corn... corn doesn't smell. What smells is what you soak it in - what comes in the can or whatever you chose. The other is the size and how it's fished. It goes to intent. You're fishing a coffee bean on the surface to imitate a beetle. It's a lure, a fly. If the bean smelled like something natural that would attract a strike, then yes, it'd be illegal. But it does not. It's a coffee bean.
Members Matt Madura Posted July 27, 2009 Members Posted July 27, 2009 OK. I'm not an attorney, but I have done a lot of work with legal documents. My opinion is that a coffee bean is not a "natural fish food", so, by itself does not qualify as natural bait. In other words, we are not trying to tie a fly that looks like a coffee bean. The coffee bean is used as material to construct a fly that looks like "natural fish food". So, in my opinion, the question comes down to scent. On this, I tend to agree with Phil Lilley. If it's covered in all that paint and glue, I don't think the scent is going to come out. Even if it did, was there a study done that promotes the concept that trout are drawn to the smell of coffee??? Or, are they just after the caffeine? As far as the Natural Bait, corn is not a natural bait either, we can't use that on the upper. You wouldn't dress up a piece of corn would you? I'm leaning toward the caffine.
Micheal Kyle Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Hum Corn does not smell, i used to live on a 30,000 acre ranch and we had corn believe me there is a smell go to any silo when they are drying Corn and see what it smells like. Corn will float really anything that can break the surface tension of water will float.I can assure you i can put enough corn on a hook to float. Plus where are you buying unscented Dry coffee beans? The reason I compared to corn was to make the comparison of plants. So I would assume with the ability of a coffee bean to be legal then would a raisin be legal. because a coffee bean starts out off a tree as a coffee cherry then it is dried and thus the bean is born. A raisin is produced by taking a grape and drying it. Just a thought To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
Bman Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I make my beetles foam body. It’s my understanding that foam body terrestrials are legal in the restricted zone. Since foam is synthetic, why is it legal and a plastic/rubber not? Something I've always wondered about. The only good line is a tight line
