Outside Bend Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I believe it's only illegal to sell sculpins if they've been caught from a river, stream, or other water of the state and then being sold by a bait dealer. If someone is raising them domestically and selling them, it's legal. <{{{><
Blue Ribbon Fly Shop Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 May I politely recommend using circle hooks. This decreases fish mortality significantly when bait fishing. We sell them at Blue Ribbon in Mountain Home for those interested. Good day. Larry Babin Blue Ribbon Fly Shop www.blueribbonflyfish.com
gotmuddy Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I have matzuo size 6 and 8 circle hooks that I keep in my tackle box. I usually use crankbaits, countdowns, and jigs, but I have heard that nothing catches big browns like sculpins. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
rps Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 The long time guides rig sculpin using dead ones. I have seen some peel them, while others do not. They will lip hook the bait fish, but then they use a half hitch around the tail that enables them to throw the bait out out with the heavier head first. The knot disappears when the line slides off the tail. As fished on the White, Sculpin are trophy baits, and usually the takers are browns. The bait is definitely not a numbers bait. Of course they are using bait up to the size of your thumb. Oh, and as I wrote last year (see above) please use a circle hook.
