Danoinark Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 An OAF'er posed the question if there are any fly fishing tournaments or competitions in the State of Missouri. I would also think that any casting events would also qualify. If anyone knows of anything please post. I do know the Beaver Dam Store on the Beaver tail waters in Arkansas has an annual one fly tournament and there may well be fund raising events that are competitive at other places. Cocry Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Bringing this thread back. I would be more than interested to look into a fly fishing tournament of any kind
flytyer57 Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Bringing this thread back. I would be more than interested to look into a fly fishing tournament of any kind It was brought up at the North Akansas Fly Fishers meeting this month to possibly look into some sort of one fly competition. I'll try to keep everyone posted on that. Meetings are held every third Tuesday of the month. NAFF web site. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
laker67 Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Bringing this thread back. I would be more than interested to look into a fly fishing tournament of any kind Rockbridge used to have some in the past. The one I fished was sponsored by Mark Neuman out of St. Louis. I would think that you could sponsor one yourself there. Rockbridge makes its money from the fish weighed in at the end of the tourney. It was a 20 dollar entry and 34 of us fished for the biggest 5 fish stringer. I was lucky enough to catch a 29.5 pound stringer and place 3rd. You could basically start a braggin rights tourney on any of missouri's trout waters. Set an entry fee that would be donated to a local charity or youth group. Count me in.
Gavin Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Theres a two fly event at the Troutbust this year...not sure about the details but you could ask Jim..My wife and I were planning to go. http://www.ozarkflyfishers.org/graphindex/octoberfest.pdf
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 24, 2010 Root Admin Posted August 24, 2010 I'd be interested in holding another contest here on Taney. Just don't know how to do it. So many variables... the #1 obstacle is generation. #2 is crowds. Actually right now would be a great time to hold one. Crowds aren't that bad even on weekends and the trout aren't too beat up... yet. Another draw back - tournaments are hated by a lot of people. It draws too many people so if it's crowded, the tournament gets blamed. Some don't like any kind of contest that has to do the fishing cause it spoils the sport. Sorry to be negative... I like any activity that brings anglers together for some fellowship AND I like competition. It's fun.
Zack Hoyt Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 We had one on the Beaver Tailwaters this year to benefit Reel Recovery. The Dam Store hasnt had one in a few years. It seems it would be a bit tough getting the fly fishing companies behind it. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 24, 2010 Root Admin Posted August 24, 2010 I've never asked any companies to sponsor our tournaments... don't really need to. If they want to jump on, that'd be great. Should make it a benefit of some kind... I guess. I'm always trying to raise money for Big Brothers here in Branson.
Zack Hoyt Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 We were asking for prize donations. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Cocry Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 It would be kind of neat to let the winner choose the charity of his/her choice... if they wanted to of course. Just having them submit their charity at time of payment. Would the parks in missouri allow something like this to go on? It would be very interesting to see what kind of turnout you could get and it of course would be awesome to see any contributions going to a good cause.
