Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 2, 2009 Root Admin Posted August 2, 2009 I don't watch alot of TV... but I've seen my share of fishing shows over the years and there are few I'd consider good. Camera angles... effects... I like education. I love education. If you're educating your viewer, all you're doing is bragging. Any ideas?
Zack Hoyt Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I am enjoying the Trout Bum Diaries movies. Not so much educational, but very good scenery and shows the good with the bad. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 2, 2009 Author Root Admin Posted August 2, 2009 I'm watching North to Alaska. Scenery good of course but all you're watching is someone catch fish. "Look I caught another fish!" Talk about where you're fishing... why you're fishing there... what's going on with the run... how you're fishing and why... be more creative with the camera.
smallmouthjoe Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I agree with you on the education part Phil. I want to learn something, not be bombarded with advertising and someone trying to sell me something. Pro Team Journal is the worst at that and that's why I stopped watching it. The best show I've seen in awhile is On The Rise.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 If you want an educational show....watch The New Fly Fisher on WFN (World Fishing Network) channel #394 on Dish Network. It mixes in a good "how-to" feel with your normal "trip" fishing shows where they're at this fabulous river catching these fabulous fish! Sometimes it crosses the line and gets too far on the boring side of the "how-to" genre, but overall it is a good show. The show is older, I think from 2003 to 2005 maybe? So no new episodes but its good. I'll agree with Smallmouth Joe, my favorite fishing show right now is On The Rise or Familiar Waters on The Outdoor Channel. Adventure Guides is decent although they over-board on the whole advertising scheme for Suzuki...its a little ridiculous. As far as videos...I'm with zhoyt. I love the Trout Bum movies but there is some other good movies out right now. Soulfish, Raising the Ghost, and Hustle n' Fish are really good movies too. Probably my favorite fly fishing movie right now is Drift...the cinematography (spelling?) in this movie is amazing! Its a little bit different flavor than the Trout Bum series but its still an "adventure" fly fishing movie. Its really great.... Also, go watch trailers for Nervous Waters, Eastern Rises, and Rivers of a Lost Coast....I can't wait for theses movies to be released! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
zander Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 On the rise is good, but since it is the production of TU a large segment of time is allocated to conservation aspects and not fishing. I understand why but I like to watch more fishing. That being said good camera work and quality editing I think make or break shows.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 2, 2009 Author Root Admin Posted August 2, 2009 How about on line shows... I'm wanting to do something on line. Just getting ideas. Thanks.
Danoinark Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Phil I certainly agree with you. I am more inclined to watch a show that is instructional versus for the scenery and just catching. I want to know why a certain fly/lure is being used, the techniques, reading streams/rivers that sort of thing. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Bman Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I used to really enjoy Addictive fishing with Capt Blair Morgan. He's a wild man, educational. Most shows were saltwater though. Can't find his show anymore, maybe more this fall. He would use the buggy whip too. The only good line is a tight line
Dutch Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 The only time I can stay on a fishing show is when something instructional is going on. I hate shows about products and I had red necks who hoot and holler over a 13" fish and run to the end of the boat and give HIGH 5s. Pretty much I consider fishing to NOT be a spectator sport.
