Clay Goforth Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 This is great feedback guys! I don't know how to do this without it acting like a show plug so I just have to say it. I host a TV show on DirecTV on the Pursuit Channel and completely understand your frustration with TV shows being a 30 minute infommercial on the "Latest and Greatest." Unfortunately, with the way airtime purchasing works, TV shows HAVE to do the shameless plugs, product showcases, and other garbage because that is how you pull in the sponsor money. The airtime on the networks is incredibly expensive and unless you have someone who is independently wealthy that just wants to fund the show with no returns or you can convince sponsors that simple product placement is enough for them to give you $50k, outdoor programming will forever have product pushing. It is actually very annoying, as someone who got into the business to fish for a living, to have to waste valuable fishing time using a lure that doesn't work half as well as another because you are required to fish that lure because they pay the bills. I understand the frustration but don't think it is the total fault of the shows. The networks are responsible for making the airtime so expensive that you have to go solicit all those sponsorships which you then have to plug. Now, having said all that, in my mind what makes a good show is someone who comes across very passionate about what they are doing, very respectful of the fish they are catching, very cool/different/artsy camera angles, good description of what is being used (techniques, baits, flys, etc), as Dano said, reading the water, fantastic scenery, humor and good interaction between the people on the show. I would really love if the same people who are commenting on this thread would watch an episode or two of our TV show and give us some of this same type feedback. Don't worry about hurting my feelings in the feedback because most likely, I will agree with you. I simply work for the show, and have no control over the way the show gets put together so, I give the owners of the show my feedback all the time. I have fought tooth and nail against being a "gear whore" for them because I don't want my name on anything I don't think is a good product. Anyway, our show times are below. DirecTV Channel 608 (The Pursuit Channel) Thursdays 3pm Saturdays 10pm Sundays 6:30am Thanks in advance for those of you that catch the show and offer feedback. I think you will be pleased with some of what we are doing. Phil, if you have any questions for me about filming or anything, please let me know. Danoinark Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Clay thanks for the input and insight to the technical and business side of this. For those of us not on dish are any of the archived programs on the web, posted at other locations? Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Flysmallie Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Dano, There are some sample videos here. G2 Fishing Frenzy However the videos don't seem to work with Mozilla. Switched to IE and everything ran fine. I have been watching a little of the NWT Canada sample. I like it so far. Clay, you can really tell that you struggle not to be a product pusher. I also don't have DirectTV, so these are the only videos that I can judge you off of. But I have watched the first half of the Canada trip and like it so far. Â Â
RSBreth Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 I like anything entertaining, like that "Fish On" show with the girls who couldn't fish but were in bikinis' the entire show. No seriously, I still like the In-Fisherman shows, but most outdoor T.V. (not just fishing) blows. I don't mind a little pandering to the sponsor, but a half hour infomercial is just that.
Clay Goforth Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Thanks guys...the website versions of the shows that are posted now are not completed episodes. There will be full episodes uploaded soon but these are just rough cuts so keep that in mind when you watch online. So how did the attempt at the line class records turn out? Felt really bad for Jeff, he had a bad day. Â Â

hoglaw Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 This may not be responsive, but I absolutely loved "Ozark Outdoors." I can't remember the two guy's names who did most of the shows, one was called "Crow" and I can't remember the other. Anyhow, they had a noodling show, a limblining show, a bowfishing show....my kind of guys. Never could figure out where they were...I assumed north central Arkansas somewhere but I really don't know.
loo10 Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 The first fishing shows I ever watched were Virgil Ward's. It just happened to be on. He just grunted and moaned as he reeled the fish in...like he had on a real "hoss". It was entertaining. Years later, I happened to fish alongside him at Bennett Springs and did much better than he did. My ego got stroked BIG TIME that day. These days, I watch the ones that are fishing a technique or body of water that is going to help me in some way. I too, occasionally watch "North To Alaska". But frankly, my favorite segment is "Cookin' with Smokey Joe." I don't get too much enjoyment watching people crank halibut off the bottom over-and-over. But, as Mr. Lilley knows, I appreciate a good salmon recipe. HA Lately, I have been watching Hook-N-Look. This program shows them fishing and then they scuba to show the structure. Unique concept. Personally, I enjoy the occasional video that both Phil & Bill (or is it Bill & Phil?????) or Jeremy Hunt puts out as much as any. It's fishing in my backyard and it's educates me to be better on the water. The videos of the guys fishing when the water was coming over the floodgates gave me the HUEVOS to try it myself. I knew what to expect and I caught ALOT of big fish after that. Thanks alot fellas. My one request.......MORE!
