KC BBQ is about the sauce, not the meat. The meat's easy... unless you're from Texas!

KC

I know some BBQ folks that'd put your lights out for a statement like that. :D

Meat is easy -- good meat isn't.

To the OP: dgames and the others makes a good point -- the atmosphere at Bryant's original location (not the one near the race track) is an important part of the deal. I suppose if I had to recommend just one place for an out-of-towner, that would be it. And, I'm in the group of folks that prefers their other sauce, not the original so much.

I think all the KC Masterpiece's are gone -- and that's good riddance, IMO. Their sauce is OK though, and holds special memories for me. When I was in college it was just coming out and the cook where I lived would buy it in gallon jugs with a generic-looking black and white label. We could put that sauce on anything she made and make it edible.

Arthur Bryants is okay....the nostalgia is excellent.

Jack's Stack....tops for me.

Rosedales.....great beans and the sauce is kind-a cool

Dry rub.....it's okay....justnot a KC speciality....won't go any further on that. Don't want to start a BB-Q war.

If you liked the sound....Thank the engineer!

I tried Jack Stack (on the plaza) and was not impressed.

The ribs were flavorless, they smelled good, but didnt have any flavor, its like they boiled them or something? Also had a side of their baked beans... they had some flavor, but it tasted more like chili than baked beans.

Wont be going back

Oklahoma Joe's and Hayward's are my favorites. The sausage at Hayward's is incredible .... a must do. PC.

OK Joes (even though the original location seems to get more out of hand all the time, that line can be 45 minutes long sometimes!)

Haywards

Woodyard BBQ(in Merriam)

Rosedale (hands down my favorite)

Zarda

Gates (second favorite)

Smokin Joes (before the downtown locations shut down, I would still eat there even if I knew they had rats. Every restuarant downtown probably has them)

The other Smokin Joes in Olathe

Bryant's (the only one I like is the original location down on Brooklyn, I have had bad luck with the one at Legends and Ameristar)

These are all great places to eat IMO.

I think I spent to much time thinking about BBQ, wow

I am not a fan of Jackstack or KC Masterpiece, don't really care for them. Not big on Danny Edwards BBQ (SW Blvd) either and their parking situation is horrible

Maybe you caught them on an off night. They definitely don't boil their ribs -- no self-respecting BBQer would ever do such a thing. As to their beans -- they're usually excellent. With a sweet / smoky / spicy balance and a chunk of burnt end every so often, they're hard to beat.

KC is a BBQ town and its hard to answer how good one is. Bryants is different, not just in atmosphere, but in BBQ. Any of the older ones is worth a visit, Gates, Rosedale or Bryants and decide for yourself.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I love the fact that everyone overlooks the hidden gem of BBQ in the area. I'm just lucky enough to have the only one in the city nearby- and Paola Cat.... Good Old K&M BBQ in Spring Hill- used to have a better "old smokey and plaid table cloth" look but they built a new one about 1.5 years ago.

By the way- any ribs wet will never hold a candle to Memphis style........ especially from Rendevous BBQ!!!!

Look... don't want to ruffle any feather's here. KC BBQ'ers "KNOW" how to cook the meat. Steaks are meant to be ate with out sauce in my opinion. Go ahead and drown it in

A1! BBQ is a different story. I'm asking you Ness... just for fun bud... where in our town do you enjoy BBQ?
