TroutRinger Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 I will be in Columbia/Ashland this weekend and will have a few hours to kill on Saturday. Does anyone know of any good smallie streams (and access points) close to Columbia. I read in a book that Hinsley Creek had some smallies in it, but don't know much else. I'd appreciate any help. TroutRinger Posted August 27, 2009 Author Posted August 27, 2009 ...bump... "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." "There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot."
fishinwrench Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Auxvasse cr. (above, and just a little ways below hwy.54) has some nice Smallies in it. When I used to fish it you could gain access through the old rock quarry north of Kingdom city....but that was more than a decade ago. It has long stretches of mud bank interrupted by rocky, gravelly sections. Skip the mud and fish the rock....they are in there. Other than that, there's Cedar cr., but I think Smallmouth are about extict from that creek. I've never checked out Hinsley cr. Not even sure where it is.

Now that I think about it, I think it is called Hinkson Creek. It runs through Capen Park. "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." TroutRinger Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 After spending about 20 minutes trying to fix my Google Earth which got all screwed up, I finally found it. It is called Hinkson Creek. The MDC website says it has a "fair population" of smallies", but who knows how accurate that is. I might give it a shot anyway. fishinwrench Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 Right on. Only one way to find out I googled....and found a couple of pieces about it: http://www.riverfacts.com/rivers/11729.html http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/...reek-uncertain/ If we never hear from you again.....We'll KNOW !
Dave Cook Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I think Cedar Creek is your best bet near Columbia for creek fishing. Take the road to the airport, 'H', keep going east past Englewood until the road ends at the creek. A better bet may be for bluegill on the "South Farm", off of hiway 63 south. Take the road that runs behind the Channel 8 TV tower to a trophy, catch & release bluegill pond. Dave Cook Missouri Trout Fishermen's Association - Kansas City
TroutRinger Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 I found Cedar Creek on Google Earth but can't really tell if there is parking or not. Do you remember if there is any? I also found the pound. Thanks for giving me some options. "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." creek wader Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I've fished the lower Cedar creek, a few years ago. Caught a nice 14" smallie, 18" largemouth and a average white bass. Next time there, I didn't get a hit. The lower Cedar is muddy and all around nasty. I've heard the upper is much cleaner. Let us know where you go and how you do. ...wader wader
