mosouthpaw Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 they sure arent manly but they run forever and are 4x4.... subaru outback. Go to colorado and you will see so many outbacks... seems like thats all you see.
Members Ibeenfishing Posted October 28, 2009 Members Posted October 28, 2009 I bought a 89 model wrangler new and it was a mechanical horror-top to bottom end to end.It stayed in the 29 days the 1st year--one more day and it would have been covered by the lemon law of the state of Texas. It was purchased late after noon and return back to dealer next morning with numerous problems--such as gas tank leaking all over garage floor..I would not purchase another one.
Members timr0123 Posted March 25, 2010 Members Posted March 25, 2010 I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler. It has a 4.0 liter and 5 speed manual trans. It as 151,000 miles and climbing. I have alway got 19 to 20 MPG's on the highway and 15MPG in town if I can keep my foot out of it. I have pulled a 17' bass boat with it from day one. I can't count how many fishing trips we've taken to Grand, Beaver and Table Rock in the old Jeep. It has never used oil. My biggest expense I have had, tires every 50,000 miles and a new soft top this year.
oneshot Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Ok I was looking at an ATV $10 like I say why buy something like this I can't legally drive on most highways. With that kind of money or less I can get a nice CJ 5 or 7.Take the Top off beat through the brush have a ball.As far as Hunting,Fishing and Camping Gear keep it small. I had a CJ 5 straight 6 Love It! oneshot
Members Bwinkert Posted May 24, 2010 Members Posted May 24, 2010 I drive a 1998 Jeep Wrangler with the Straight six and auto, hard top / full doors. 32"x11.50 tires, throttle body spacer, cold air intake and a Hedman Headder. It doesn't run through the oil, doesn't leak fluids and runs like a champ at 92,000 miles. I manage to get all my fly rods and gear inside, I leave the back seat out and most of the summer I have no top or doors on. I have had it in some pretty deep mud and some pretty tight places and it just pulls it's self right along. I also love the amount of things you can do to the Jeep. After all it stands for Just Empty Every Pocket. I also have a rack I use with the top off to haul my Kayak. Avoid the jeeps with square headlights, I believe 91-95, there where no 96 jeep wranglers as the 97 was released midway through 96 with the redesigned round (real jeep) headlights. Also avoid the 4 banger. If your looking for an increase in towing capacity look into the Wrangler Unlimited I believe you can tow a little more with it. My 98 is rated at 2000lbs. Here is a photo of my Jeep on the Peel Ferry between Protem Missouri and Peel Arkansas.
Members DLM84 Posted August 11, 2010 Author Members Posted August 11, 2010 Thanks for the help every one. Its been a while since I have been in this thread. I am surprised it is still around! LOL I am now thinking about going a different route. I think I will nix the 4x4 requirement and I found out you can get a kit that allows a car to pull one of those small trailers people use to haul ridding lawn mowers around. I think that really could be the ticket. The boats I have been looking into would be like a 1 person canoe or some thing like that in a john boat. They can be carried to the shore and back. No need of launching ramps. Then I could look at those really good gas mileage cars. Now with the hatch back and 4 full doors I think I could be set. Lots of room inside and with a trailer hitch I could bring a little boat or drag my mower out to the parents or to the hunting lease (those deer take a lot of room) or what ever needs hauling. Those little trailer hitches do about 1,000lbs no more. Could be really help full around the place. I may end up looking at some thing bigger than a 2 man lake boat. My dad and I live near Stockton lake and have always wanted to fish there but his John Boat is to small. We need some thing with taller sides to fish lake Stockton.
Trav Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Interesting thread. I am considering a Wrangler myself. The big dodge I have eats a lot of gas! This is definately food for thought. I wouldn't ramp a boat without a 4x4 though. There have been a lot of times where my truck just spun on wet ramps and the 4x4 was needed. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
