perchjerker Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Trolling gold little jake lures in Jan. & Feb. is great around Monkey Island and Short Creek.Troll them till you catch a few in the same place then just start casting them. Deaddrift and I do this and there have been times where you can catch a fish every cast for about 15 to 20 cast. There are usally no gaints this way but plenty of action. Lures in the past which seem to come and go are; Little Cleos (gold & orange), Small Rooster Tails (brown & gold or black & silver), Rebels Wee Crawdad (light brown & cream color) and a #5 Rattalin Rapp by Rappala (natural fish color). But in thirty nine years of fishing nothing beats a white power egg with 1/2 an inflated night crawler on lower Tayney for numbers and size.
tippet7 Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I was fishing one summer when a non-local was doing the whole 'scud shuffle' as you put it - he was shuffling like mad around outlet #1 - not even trying to be sneaky - and calling his buddies over "Hey guys - come over here and kick around - look at all these fish!!!!" He had half the trout in upper Taney crowded around his feet. Finally someone had enough and pointed out the posted signs. I bet some of y'all see this quite a bit. I started fishing Taney when I was about 12 (I think it was before the posted 'no shuffling' signs) - and the first time I fished I found that doing it produced fish. Thank goodness after catching a few I realized that it just felt wrong fishing that way. I'd rather get skunked (which I have once). Flyguy, I dont think you are thinking about Taneycomo. You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
denjac Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Guess since I am a spin guy I should put my two cents in. My go to bait for wading is the super duper , brass and red. On rare occasions I can put it on the fly guys with it. Most of the time though I hold my own. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Fly_Guy Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Flyguy, I dont think you are thinking about Taneycomo. Ok - I called SOH Hatchery and they said that the 'no shuffling' is in the "Trout Stream Ethics" guide at the outlets - that's probably what I was thinking of. I knew I had read it around there somewhere! John from SOH also said that shuffling is not illegal (as it is in Arkansas). They've apparently had biologists come in and conclude that no amount of shuffling by one individual is enough to damage the resource. Sry for confusion - but I think that big 'no shuffling' signs wouldn't go amiss - ethically.

Wish everybody would stop talking about Monkey Island, That place isn't any good. There's no fish there. It's the worst place on the lake to fish. People need to stop wasting their time there! Real men go propless!
