Members billynwtf Posted November 23, 2009 Members Posted November 23, 2009 Your choice of line, rod and reel are all winners.
trizkid Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Wound up buying Rio Gold WF5F. Cabela's was of course out of that size so I paid retail. Going on a Sage Launch 9' 5 wt. and Lamson Konic #2 reel. It's a med-fast rod so I went with the gold because I didn't want the heavier line. I have the same rod and reel set up as you only my rods a 8'6 ft. I currently have s/a headstart line on it and it great...i think anyway...thinking about getting another spool and putting some double taper on it though TrIzzout
Wayne SW/MO Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Eric WF is a general description, and they aren't all created equal. The last thing you want starting out is a WF built for distance, but requiring near perfect form to cast. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
joeD Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Retail, name-brand masturbation. Things, things, stuff, and more things. Ignore that, and go forth, young man, and fish, before it is too late...It is the doing, the act itself, that makes us who we are... Now, what about leader brands?

Ignore that, and go forth, young man, and fish, before it is too late...It is the doing, the act itself, that makes us who we are... It's all true, Joe. Can't deny it. Unfortunately, though, I'm bored enough that it matters to me... I don't have any stickers on my truck, by the way, so...
Wayne SW/MO Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Eric many of the easy casting lines, like Headstart and others, make good lines for the air resistant bass flies. It won't be a loss if you start with one of them and avoid bad habits that can be a curse. If you develop good form you can pick and choose a line at will. No one has mentioned Double Tapers, which for me is the only choice for roll casting. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
3wt Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Gold sounds about right for that rod from what I understand. I have the same rod from around 1995 when they were the Discovery series. I think they're a bit faster now, but it shouldn't need a heavy line to load it. You'll be happy with Rio. They cover all of my line leader and tippet needs.
Geoff Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 if you havent gotten any yet, cabela's has all theirs on sale. i was there last night. Got some Rio Streamline Trout for 29 bucks instead of 60. Plan to test it out today "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
drew03cmc Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Don't be surprised if you cannot feel the rod load for short casts. You may be better served with a WF6F line for in close work. Airflo makes a hell of a nice trout fly line in their Airflo Ridge Tactical Trout. It floats higher than any other line I have seen or used. If possible, you should cast the line on your rod before you buy. Andy
