Members letchie Posted December 22, 2009 Members Posted December 22, 2009 I am traveling to Cancun in June. I want to book a guide for a full day trip while I am down there. I have found several guides via the internet, however, would like to get a recommendation if anyone has one and is willing.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 22, 2009 Root Admin Posted December 22, 2009 I went with a guide 3 years ago but I don't know his name. We fly fished the inland waters, mangroves, and caught baby tarpon. I'd think June would be much better fishing. I'll try to find his name in my records but don't hold your breath... I don't keep good records.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Hey Letchie, welcome. St Charles here. I used a guy named Rodman Hunter. We had a blast catching baby tarpon well into the night. Even had a croc try and eat a fish I had on. His jaws were snapping and the guide was stabbing him in the head with the pushpole. My then, 6 year old daughter was climbing up my body screaming. As soon as we got the fish in the boat my wife and daughter wanted to go in. I've attached his site link and also another I found from a not so happy customer of his. http://www.cancunlighttackle.com http://www.edgeangling.com/forums/trip-sharing/1865-rodman-hunter-mexico-ripoff.html Let us know how you do. I also caught fish in the surf in front of our resort. SIO3
Members letchie Posted December 28, 2009 Author Members Posted December 28, 2009 What did you use in front of the resort and what time of day was it?
snagged in outlet 3 Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I used clouser minnows in the surf. I fished early and late. I decided to fish the surf because, when I was snorkeling I saw baracuda and schools of jacks. I was fishing in front of the tiki bar while everyone was drinking. I would have done much better with a spinning rod and spoons because you can cast them a mile. A jig-head and grub would probably work too. I always walk up and down the beach wherever we stay and look for good looking areas. Rock piles, channels and grass beds are great places to fish. Even better if they are in the nude beach areas!!! Let us know how you do. SIO3
Members letchie Posted December 29, 2009 Author Members Posted December 29, 2009 Sounds doable. I could get up before the family and go out in seach of some fish! I assume an 8 or 9wt would be suffecient. I found a guide named Martin van der Does with cancuntarponfishing.com whoI think I will be booking a trip with. Sounds pretty good.
Paola Cat Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 SIO3 is right on!!!! I also have used an 8 weight with clousers right off the resort beach .... early morning and in the evening. Gotta get out early before the jet skis and parasails, and touristas hit the beach. I caught a few snook and a few jacks. Nothing huge. Never hired a guide in Cancun. PC Cheers. PC
