Members Pflugradt Posted February 12, 2010 Members Posted February 12, 2010 Just looking for a good selection of flies to fish with down that way. I have never fished Crane before and really really want to check this one off my list. I normally fish midges and streamers maybe a sanjuan worm or two not much else. So what do you all use and like. If you can give me a recipe (via PM if you like I know how secrets can be) as I'll be tying whatever I am going to be fishing with. Thanks yall. Steve Check out my warm water flytying and flyfishing how to.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 In my excursions to Crane, I've got the majority of my fish on san juan worms. Egg patterns work well too. Your normal nymphs like copper johns, RFSNs, GRHEs, etc in larger sizes (12s and 14s) work well too. Mohair leeches and buggers have caught some nice fish out of there too. I mean, honestly, as long as you can be stealthy and get the fly down to the fish with a good drift...you should catch fish. Stealth is huge down there... I really don't believe the fish are that picky...you just have to execute a drag free drift and get the fly down to the fish without the fishing knowing you're there... Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Gavin Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 I'd agree with above....Rainbows are suckers for egg flies, worms, and mohair leaches..but you gotta make your first cast count. Cheers.
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 As said, more than fly selection, stealth is critical. Crane is small and clear, and the trout are wild. If you don't get your knees dirty, you aren't fishing it right. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
catman Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 stealth is critical, has anyone said that yet!!!! very critical at Crane I was born at night, but not last night. Odds are with the prepared...
Members jefly77 Posted February 14, 2010 Members Posted February 14, 2010 Pflugradt If you ever spin fish you can usually catch quite a few throwing small mepps, spoons, 1/16 oz jigs and smaller and eveb small rebels. I went three weeks ago on the rainy saturday and caught 4 in about 2 hours with one going about 14". Caught him on a little silver fox minnow hardbody spinner in balck and silver. Good luck!!
Members MoJohn Posted February 16, 2010 Members Posted February 16, 2010 Fished the Upper Section on Friday afternoon and caught quite a few. My flyfishing skills are still limited in wooded areas so I stuck close to the bridge holes for that, caught several small ones on a brown/olive wooly bugger. On the light spin tackle I was catching them on a 1/32 brown/orange marbou jig I had tied(thanks to Phil's video on how to tie them). Biggest was just at 16". Caught it in the hole at the second bend down from the bridge where the creek goes back south from east hidding behind the big tree there. I'm 6'4" 230 so big objects make stealth easier Will post picture of 16" er as soon as I can figure getting it from my phone to on here. Spelling and puntuation error provided free of charge
