You can eliminate most of the problems with spinning reels by doing 3 things. With new line pull off about 50 yards of line and then wind back on slowly between thumb and forefinger. Take the spool of and put it in real warm water for about 5 minutes. When you fish it close the bail manually. After a fishing trip you can repeat the first and second step for more security. This will virtually eliminate the problems if you're using a premium line in 12# and under breaking strength.

Right on Wayne. Always close the bail manually. That's the best method to eliminate those loops. Fellow anglers used to look at me like I was crazy (those that didn't know me ... those that did knew I really am) .... anyway ... it becomes second nature ... you cast ... and your off hand closes the bail. What do you recommend I try? I've been using Vanish for a couple years and love it. I've stayed away from the lines that are similar to braid because they seem visible to the fish.

I use either Fireline or Powerpro and a fluorocarbon leader. I use mono for leaders only when using topwaters.

All of the "tricks" for making mono or fluoro more manageable aren't even an afterthought after using superlines.

There's a learning curve to using them, but any negative is outweighed by the positives.

Thanks, RS. I only put on enough to fill a third of the spool, otherwise it's a mess. You don't use a leader except topwater, even in really clear water?

What knot do you use to attach the leader to fireline? I used fireline on a spinning rod at a pond that stays pretty muddy and I didn't use a leader.

Usually the leader is about the length rod the rod I'm using, 7' to 8'. Blood knot or back to back uni-knot to tie them together. Usually.

I have nearly eliminated spinning equipment from my tool set. I would entirely if I could find and rig an outfit to throw 1/16 and 1/32 ounce jigs for crappie and trout.

Try rigging the spinning rigs with braid equal to the diameter (not the test) of the mono or fluorocarbon you wish to fish. Then use an Alberto knot to join the leader to the braid. Make sure the leader is just short of being reeled onto the reel spool.

Short filling a spool restricts the flow of line off of the spool and affects distance and accuracy. What do you mean by a "mess"?

Braid is not a perfect option for mono, or its variants. There are times when mono because of its stretch is an advantage as is its sinking ability. Braid can also be touchy in the 2-4# diameters.

I prefer mono for its diversity. AND the stretch. The stretch saves a lot of expensive lures when you have to use a retriever to get them back. Sure the hook set is slightly compromising but it is as strong as you need. Also, when you are flipping one moment, trolling the next, then span casting points as you drop shot deep cover, mono gives you the no brainer of spooling all your rigs with one type of line. I buy bulk and change my line about once a month...sometimes after every trip. I like a full spool on my spinning rigs.

I wasn't saying there are not advantages to the "super lines"...just saying not enough to matter to "me". I think most people scratch their heads while looking at line when the tried and true simplicity of mono will suit most people's practicality. Fishing is supposed to be fun. Why think too much over the small stuff?

My intention of this thread was not to create debate. Just expressing my experience.

I probably took a little umbrage to the header "Don't believe the hype", and maybe didn't respond as well as I could.

I still think mono creates a rather large vacuum.
