abkeenan Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 What treble hooks do you guys prefer when switching out/replacing/etc. on your jerkbaits/crank/etc. Also where would you buy in bulk? Say around 100? Procraft97 was nice enough to paint my blank baits and now i need to find a source to dress these lures with trebles. I found 3 sites: Barlows Tackle, Captain Hooks and Stamina tackle that offer some pretty decent prices. Dont know much about trebles so i am coming to you guys for help. I found some good deals Mustad Triple Grip and a hand full of others. Found a real good deal on on Matzuo Sickle trebles, any one know about them? Suggestions? Would like to keep it around 20 bucks for 100 or so. Thanks. Brett
Larry Richards Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I use the Mustad Triple Grip hook as replacements on my Jerkbaits and crankbaits. Most of the time I replace the hooks on mew bait before I ever fish them.I also like to give my new baits a clear coat of Devcon II just to cut down on the hook rubs and give the bait a little longer life.KVD uses Mustad Triple Grip hooks on all of his baits also.
rps Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I've been using VMC barbarians for the last year. Very sharp and sticky. Cabelas sells them in 25 packs.
steveearle Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I've tried most. I like the Lucky Craft replacment trebles, but they are about $1 each and hard to find. Got to where I use them on LC only (D-20 crankbait in particluar. I have settled on the Owner stinger (ST-36)for most others. Size 6 for wiggle warts, size 2 for Spooks, etc. The 2x owner stinger (ST-41) is great for big baits. The 2x owners are heavy like the LC hook, and I like to use for bigger crankbaits...Size 2s for DD-22, LC D-20, Fat Free Shad, etc. I have bought hundreds of triple grips and I think they are OK for smaller baits. My opinion is that the bigger ones have a little too much flex for big biats. Have not tried the new KVD triple grips. The heavier wire and shoter shank may help this issue. The black nickel Mustad round bends are pretty nice as well.

abkeenan Posted February 20, 2010 Author Posted February 20, 2010 what size split rings would you guys pair with a wiggle wart and a pointer 100?
motoman Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 what size split rings would you guys pair with a wiggle wart and a pointer 100? - I've always been a fan of #6 trebles on those size cranks. And I just use the existing split ring that's on them for the hooks. Except on jerkbaits, then I switch the nose split ring to an oval split ring (see link below). Probably not necessary; just a personal preference. (and heck, the high end jerkbaits come with 'em, can't be too bad of an idea.) - http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_30197_100010005_100000000_100010000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_SEARCH
rps Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Smallest split ring possible. Best idea for line joins, hook joins, and all else.
Nitroman Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Tried several, settled on & suggest the following: #1 VMC BARBARIAN in sizes 4 & 6 both BLACK NICKLE & RED, available from CABELA'S. #2 BILL LEWIS SET LOCK ( MADE BY EAGLE CLAW ) in sizes 4 - 5 - 6 both standard & RED, available from TACKLE WAREHOUSE. MATZUO'S SICKLE TREBEL looks interesting, appears very similar to the VMC BARBARIAN, worth trying a pack or 2. At times to give them something a little different to look at I will use a MUSTAD ULTRA POINT DRESSED ( FEATHERED ) TREBEL in size 4 on the rear, ( JERK BAIT ONLY ) RED or WHITE depending on lure color. Most times either a size 2 or 3 split ring is used. Good advice from " MOTOMAN " I put BASS PRO XPS RICK CLUNN SIGNATURE SERIES PERFORMANCE RINGS ( OVAL SHAPED SPLIT RINGS ) on any crankbait or jerk bait that does not come with one @ the line tie. Bill Babler Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 On the treble hook front, Unlike some of the other suggestion, you are recieving, I tend to stay away from the Cutting Point hooks, such as the VMC Barbarian The premiss of the hook is not only puncture but cut its entry into the fish. The wide sholder on the hook, the manufactor says allows the hook to rotate away from the slice it cuts when entering the mouth of the fish. I have found the Owner and the VMC both cutting point hooks to be a little to heavy on tissue damage to suit me. I also believe the more surface area the hook destroys on entry makes it easier for the hook to exit the wound when fighting the fish. I much prefer needle point chemically sharpened fine wire hooks, such as the Diiachi "Death Trap" These hooks are dangeriously sharp. You will start to bleed just looking at the package. Probably would go with the Gami's next. Like Nitroman, sometimes I use a size 4 on the back and a size 6 on the front hook, but most often I use size 6 on both or all three of my stickbait hooks. Used to use the Mustad triple grip, but the hooks wire is extremely soft and bends way to easy. You almost destroy them or the fish will really mess them up just fighting the bait, or removing it from the fish. These needle sharp hooks usually have the fish caught with all three sets of hooks, and entering with such a small hole, rather than a cut, allows the barb to hold much better. As far as what some of the Pro's are using, it is pretty hard to go by that. All these hooks are fantastic, and what ever company is willing to pay the most for the exposure is what hook or bait they are going to use. The Pro's are very much unlike us in the fact, if they have problems with products, they can simply open a new package. Once we buy it, we own it. It is a completely different senireo.
