Members parachiteadams39 Posted March 23, 2010 Members Posted March 23, 2010 When fishing a creek like Crane the first thing to do is to catch a fish, any fish. So good for you Paola Cat. And the little ones are the prettiest of all. A shame one was snagged but who among us hasn't done that? There's a certain admirable honesty in showing that. And I know this will bring all sorts of opprobrium down on me but: dry fly is the hardest way to catch them. So a small fish on a dry fly is a lovely thing to do and is, arguably, as hard to pull off as catching a bigger fish on a San Juan worm or Egg Pattern. Nothing wrong with either one but surely it's just as unfair to slam someone for catching small fish on a dry as it is to slam someone for catching big fish on a San Juan worm. BTW the snake tales are not tales: last fall I ran into a herpetologist who studies cotton mouths and he said there's no better place in Missouri to find cotton mouths. He had a 5 gallon bucket with a snake as big around as my calf. So they are there. Spend money in Crane.
KATroutman13 Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 I'm a bt tardy in posting this, but here's the best one I caught on 3/3.. Would type up a full report, but I gotta cop some Z's.. :i Yup, nothing like those beautiful Crane Creek brood rainbows dragged onto the rocks.

FishinCricket Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Yup, nothing like those beautiful Crane Creek brood rainbows dragged onto the rocks. It's your fault, ya know.. I would have used a net, said a prayer, and put him back.. But you weren't there to operate the camera! Where were you? Of course, you know that I totally traumatized that fish for life! Get over yourself... cricket.c21.com
fozzie. Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 It's your fault, ya know.. I would have used a net, said a prayer, and put him back.. But you weren't there to operate the camera! Where were you? Of course, you know that I totally traumatized that fish for life! Get over yourself... Uh, then don't take the picture? If you couldn't take a picture without stressing or damaging the animal, did you really need to take the picture in the first place? Personally, I'd rather hear in a post that a fish was released unharmed then to have photo evidence it was mishandled. I mentioned this on another thread, and it always makes me wince. I think we can all agree hucking fish up on the rocks/gravel/grass/dirt/dead leaves isn't doing them any favors, and certainly not enhancing its likelihood of survival. I've done it before, and reflecting on it, realized it wasn't a particularly smart thing to do if I wanted to see that fish survive, so I quit. If you're gonna kill it, smoke it's head on a rock and be done with it. But don't kid yourself that you're releasing that fish without a lot more stress and damage than was needed. I guess the whole thing bugs me the same as people taking pot-shots at wildlife or skyblasting waterfowl- you may get lucky and bag something (or in this case get a decent pic), but you're also dramatically increasing the likelihood those animals will be unduly stressed and damaged. IMO, that's not respecting the resource. Tom.

Well I can guarantee you that you hooking them, dragging them through the water and then reaching down to grab them with your hand or a net scares the dung out of them. I bet that causes the most stress. So I guess all you guys that have a problem with "stressing" fish will have some equipment for sale soon. Gotta do your part you know. Let me know. I have cash and use hooks that have the barbs still on them. Â Â
Justin Spencer Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 I'm sure most of you know the thing that really hurts the fish is when you disrupt their slime coat, that is their protection from fungal and bacterial infections. Just wet your hands when you must touch them, put them on a wet towel or wet vegetation if you must put them down, and put them on a hot grill if you must eat them. I'm out to chase some big NFoW browns, but will have kids in tow so expectations are low. Enjoy your easter weekend! jjtroutbum Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 I gar in darn tee if I am taking a shot or blasting at birds. I am doing a litte bit more than damage. As far as a fish on the bank momentarily being somehow inhuman thats also hogwash. If you handle fish at all you do more damage to the slime than beaching one quickly. As far as using any towel, net, mesh hand bag, cradle these actually have more surface area and there for have a greater possibility of removing or displaceing more slime than some beach or a little pile of damp grass or leaves. I don't know when beaching as a practice has fallen out of vogue, but it has been just another of the many techniques to land ones catch since the sport of fishing was started. Try reading a book by any of the actually published Authors written in the last twenty years that mention landing a fish and show me one that does not simply omit the strategy but speaks out against it. Then I'll write him up and give m the same piece of my mind. Keep nit picking the way good law abiding people enjoy our resourse and see what happens to it! JJ OK rant over. Tito Degiosio Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Folks this is a Fishing forum it happens why you making a big deal if you have a problem with the way someone handles a fish or hooks one keep it to yourself most everyone on here is plenty aware of the proper way to handle a fish no need to make a big deal about it everyone on here has mishandled a fish before it's gonna happen and I'm sure it doesn't happen everytime someone catches one. but if you go back and look there is to much of this going on at different forums ozarkanglers was started to assist new comers to the waters and share stories with each other not to complain and start a debate on how someone catches / handles a fish or by what they use to catch them in a legal stand point of course it should be more about just getting outside and injoying life and nature and as far as crane creek is concerned you asked people to spend money in crane to help the stream out well if they have read it on here then they are gonna fish crane and spend money there so what do you want no money spent in crane and the stream ruined or people to visit crane and save the little gem really tired of seeing all this debating going on it's has been getting out of hand for too long now it needs to stop !!! NOW if you can't be friendly Don't say anything !! Tito Thanks Tito. Well put. Fish do more damage making a net to spawn than being drug on rocks... and the video showed the trout barely out of the water. The comment complaining about it was close to saying "don't even fish!" Hooks, even barbless, cause more trouble for fish than what this trout experienced. Comments like these are why alot of people don't post on forums. They don't want to be taken to task by something they may doing wrong. Thank you for posting the link to your video and for taking the video.
