Members panfisher Posted May 1, 2010 Members Posted May 1, 2010 If I am fishing 30' off the bank and a boat goes between me and bank is that ok. Then come's 20' on the outside of me is that ok. Or can I take a rod with 60# braid and hook there line and see who is the winner. You are fishing a bank and a boat stop's 30'ishing or is there just a in front and starts fishing and you both are crappie fishing. Is there no etiquette in fishing. Sorry to afend anyone.
eric1978 Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Speaking of etiquette, I'm thinkin' you might get a wrist-slapping for that one.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 1, 2010 Root Admin Posted May 1, 2010 Yea, we feel your pain. Have had the same thing happen on Taney at least twice a week lately. I haven't gotten an email in a while (actually quite a while) about the forum being too rough for young kids... would like to keep it that way. You'd be surprised how many boys under the age of 12 read this stuff. We need to keep it as clean as we can. Thanks.
straw hat Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 I fully agree. I bank fish a lot and have had multiple incidents where people boat so close they boat over my lines and cut them. I hate to say it but the worse is the bass fisherman. I have had them ask me to move and/or reel in my lines so they can cast the area for bass!! I use to argue or tell them to move but it is not worth it. They just get made and use foul language. I am afraid that other bank fisherman are even worse. It has gotten so that in the spring I don't even try to fish around CC. They will fish within 10' of you and cast over your lines. I have to keep reminding myself that these are not true fisherman, for true fisherman are sportsman. On a seperate note: After years of bank fishing I have noticed that if a boat goes by using the big motor within 20 or 30 ft of my bait (even if fishng real deep) the bite will slow for 20 to 30 minutes. Trolling motors, even on high speed, make little diference unless in very shallow water (such as spawning season). It amazes me how many times I see a boat motor right up to where they fish instead of approaching with their trolling motor. Have a great weekend guys!! My wife is laid up with a bad back so I will miss this weekend.

Hey thanks and it still makes the point. we all get this sometime or other. Even though I fish tournaments, I see bass fisherman that think they have the right to fish wherever because they have paid or they think they are something special. Don't let it ruin your day, it's a public lake so all we can do is let them thru and do our best to not say something that starts to much trouble. Members BigMinnow Posted May 2, 2010 Members Posted May 2, 2010 I was fishing LOZ a few weeks ago off of a private dock, and was doing fairly well when a boat of three guys pulled up next to the dock and started to cast in the same empty well that I was fishing in. I thougt ok they should move on quickly or I am going to get very upset, however they did not. After about five or six cast they found the crappie and set anchore, I was not too pleased and voiced my opion, but it fell on deaf ears(and very foul mouths) so I packed up and went in. I called the water patrol which told me it was a game wardens problem, called the game warden which I know (for good reasons) he said unless they are tied to the dock or fishing from the dock there was nothing he could do since its all public water. Ok I was heated so instead of standing there watching them catch "my fish" I went to town a got lunch bought more tackle and bait hoping when I returned they would be gone. Not only were they still there but so was the game warden and water patrol, seeing how I could be upset at this the game warden decided to stop by and check these guys out thinking they would just move on afterwards, but it seems two of them from out of state had no license and they had small bass and crappie in the live well. Doing a little more probing he found that the boat had been reported stolen from a guy near Kirksville. So all in all I guess I must believe in karma, btw I fished in the afternoon and caught my limit within an hour.
Chief Grey Bear Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Good story there Big Minnow. I am glad it turned out the way it did. I bet they wish they would have moved on now! Members tkite Posted May 2, 2010 Members Posted May 2, 2010 I took my nephew out one day to a special paved area on a point for bank fishermen. It has brush piles planted maybe 25-30 feet off the bank with buoys coming up from them. So we set up on one of them and we are the only ones there and there are 3 of these buoys. My nephews bobber is sitting right beside it and I'm casting to it with a road runner. A guy and his wife and little girl pull up in a tracker jon boat and tie up to the buoy we are fishing even hitting my nephews bobber. Thankl god I had my nephew and he had his daughter or I'd be in jail. So the moron asks if were doin any good and I bit my toungue and said were fine. I was getting ready to tell my nephew wed just move down to the next pile. But then the yoyo turn his boat radio up full blast and I know I got to get rid of him or Ill kill him. So I drop my road runner within a foot of his boat about 4 casts in a row and it doesn't even phase him. Then I grabbed my bass rod and put on a chigger craw and a split shot. I skipped it right off the side of his boat on the first cast. He said something but I couldn't hear him. My second skip I missed his boat and went right under his trolling motor. When I hit the boat with the next cast he got the idea and left. Why people don't have common sense is beyond me.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 2, 2010 Root Admin Posted May 2, 2010 I fished last evening in front of the resort. Had 4 boats go by me... even one of them slowed down and idled by, not to throw a wake. We exchanged waves. True story. We all have good and bad stories to share--- and we only hear about the bad ones. Food for thought.
rps Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 As the one who invented the only successful method to deal with PWC, (Spray where they breed!), I feel qualified to comment. Despite years of suffering one outrageous behavior after another, I remain convinced the primary cause for most of these offensive acts is simple. The poor souls do not know any better. Their actions are not the result of an intent to harm/irritate/ignore/take advantage of others. They think only as far as the immediate and themselves. Most people alive today have not been raised to think of others or to consider the consequences of all they do. In a few instances, I have had the opportunity to explain the consequences of actions to the perpetrators. Whenever I was able to do so in a non-threatening, friendly way, the response has been immediate and gratifying. The trick, of course, has been to create the opportunity to explain without my temper and natural instincts to aggression taking over. I admit I am not yet good at that.
