mrgungho Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Fished a decent work sponsored tourney this past Sat. About 50 boats. We fished all day Friday for practice and then the tourney Sat. from 7am to 3pm. We threw Spooks and Flukes mainly the whole time and caught a bunch of fish. The 1st place boat said they fished the same exact thing and they had 6 keepers with a 17.78 winning weight. Not sure why we had the 6 keeper limit but oh well. We were throwing a standard size Spook in Bone and throwing Pearl White Super Flukes. (although I heard the Bubble gum color was tearing it up as well) Kept the boat in 7' to 14' of water and threw to the banks. Had a crimp-on 1/16oz bullet weight on the Fluke about a foot above the 3/0 hook and they just tore it up. Stopped counting after about 20. Lot's of Kentucy keepers on the Fluke and a couple smallies. The Spook was bringing in the largest fish, mainly Largemouth. I also caught a couple good Smallies on Kalins Lunker Grub in Clear Salt and Pepper on a 1/4 oz jig head. Hooked in to something huge on the grub..fishing it like a jig. Never saw the fish but I had 10lb test on my baitcaster and after I got it directly below the boat in about 10' of water I couldn't budge it up at all. After about a 5 minute fight right there under the boat the grub just popped out or through it's mouth. We think it was either a Walleye or a Drum perhaps...any ideas? It was defintely the biggest fish I've ever had on the end of my pole and I have caught a few 10 pound channel cats. Anyways, we normally fish Bull Shoals so we were kind of leary of the switch to Table Rock because we hadn't fished there since Jan., but once we located the bite it was ON! Had a great day out there and I fell in love with the Fluke. Such a fun bait to fish. Well, hope this helps.. T-RockJaws Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 6 fish limit... The small company tourny I fish in is an all year thing where we keep points for awards at the end of the year. We allow 6 keepers or 3 per person which allows the same amount to each guy in the boat.

Thanks for the info "Some go to church and think about fishing, others go fishing and think about God."
Spinnaker Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Great report and great outting for you. Did you try any other soft baits besides the Fluke?
Predator1 Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I think you lost the same fish I did last week. Berkley has a new mono line out(BERLEY SUPER STRONG MAX)that is tougher and sinks faster. You also may want to check your DRAG on your reel every time before you start fishing. I bet if you would have had your drag set right you could have wore the fish out enough that he would have eventually through his fins up and gave up We caught 4-10lb catfish this last week on Berkley's Super Strong Max 6lb mono while fishing for crappie and blue gill. With the drag set just right we were able to ware out the bigger fish.(They just swim up to the boat and give up). Looks like you had an enjoyable time anyway.
Bill Babler Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Great Report. Would bet you the Farm, you side hooked a Gar. First thing, if it was a Kitty, side hooked your line would have been slimed. If you would have mouth hooked the cat, same thing. Also the hide on a Kitty is so course, usually if that hook bites you will keep them on. There are just loads of gar working those same areas as the Gizzard Shad and BAss are on. I have been hooking them on a regular basis. The will either jump if you hook them in the mouth, or if you roll over them and side or back hook them, they will move to deeper water and pull down. Hook will pop out about 90% of the time, if it is not in the mouth. Will on a very limited basis here catch a carp in the mouth, but I have never caught a drum here in over 30 years of fishing on the Rock. Ususally if you catch the carp, it is on a jig or soft plastic bottom bait. If they get it, they will always come in as that hook just will not pop out of that spongy rubber mouth. You could have side hooked one however. My bet though is a big Gar. Have hooked several in the past few weeks in the 3 to 5 ft. range, I bet up to 20 plus pounds. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
dtrs5kprs Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Bill, those gar were thick in the little coves around 13HWY. Made me wish for a bow and arrow, or maybe a shotgun.
