Hunter91 Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 I know I have asked this in the past but never got a real good answer. Does anyone know where these rock bass go during the summer months? I catch them this time of year also and love eating them, but come summertime when we catch the big gills, I never catch any.
Predator1 Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 You are right about the crawfish. Since they started spawing on Fellows, the males all had small crawfish. The couple of females we kept due to hook removal issues, had those little black water bugs that move around the top of the water. MY..MY...MY HOW GREAT THEY TASTE.

Would love to get my kids on some next month. Do they just pull out farther on the gravel places, or is this one of the fish that run for the bluffs?
Sam Posted May 14, 2010 Author Posted May 14, 2010 Do they just pull out farther on the gravel places, or is this one of the fish that run for the bluffs? I don't think they're on the bluffs or chunk rock banks in summer, because I fish those a lot and almost never catch any goggleyes there. I like to throw a little tube jig or swimming minnow up to rocky banks and flooded timber for "panfish", mostly green sunfish. I'd guess that goggleyes head for deep water in the summer, staying near the bottom for crawfish, and that they're real scattered. I've caught a few drifting a nightcrawler along the bottom for catfish where a flat drops off to the main channel on Bull Shoals in about 30-35 feet. I think the only time they bunch up is when they're nesting on gravel points and banks in the spring.

I know in june and july I get them off the end of boat docks in 15 fow to 30 fow on drop shot rigs .You can see them on your graff a lot of the times. Snakem Out.
dtrs5kprs Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Appreciate the answers. Intend to look for them a bit, will post what I learn. Ones we caught were eating little shad in with the brown fish. Little shad.
Sore Thumbs Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I like to cook the fish wrapped in bacon. When its ready I throw away the fish and eat the bacon. Lol. Just kidding. I never eat the fish I catch which brings me to my question. Do you folks think that it hurts the fishery to not keep fish when u catch them. Do you think it harms the growth of other fish because there are too many? The last thing I want to do is harm fish in the long run because I don't take them home when I do catch fish. I appreciate everyone in here and your opinions. I love this forum. I look forward to reading it everyday.
