Members kayaker Posted May 22, 2010 Members Posted May 22, 2010 How often do any of you use a sink tip for smallmouth streams. I'm thinking of just keeping another rod rigged with a sink tip in my boat, but just wondering if you think it is necessary. I already keep too many rods in the boat as is. I have a popper rod, another flyrod rigged with a weighted streamer, and a spinning rod all in my kayak. And what sink rate would you choose, a type three or faster?

Using a sink-tip line for smallie streams would all depend on if I'm using weighted flies and how fast the current is flowing. If the water's high and fast, then yes, I would use a sink-tip. I'm not sure of the sink rate, but it's a Teeny WF7ST. This line has a 7 foot sink-tip. I keep it on an extra spool so it's ready if I need it when I get to the water and find it's running fast. Otherwise, I just use a standard WF7F line by SA. Most of my streamers and nymphs for smallies are weighted, so this line works just fine. Plus I can just cut the fly off and tie on a topwater without having to switch lines. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
fishinwrench Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 IMO the circumstances where a sink-tip is truly useful are pretty rare on Mo. streams and rivers. Carrying a few Rio sinking leaders (specifically the 7ft-5ips and 3ips) might be a better alternative. It is for Me. The 3ips is excellent (perfect) for keeping clousers deep.
Zack Hoyt Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 I use a Rio Streamer Tip DC Sink Tip line for most of my smallie stuff. It is Type 3 sinking welded to a normal fly line. http://www.rioproducts.com/product.php?recKey=19 Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Gavin Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Your current setup sounds pretty good. Forget about the sink tips, and add a 5.5' casting rod for plugs, spinnerbaits, and buzzers. Youll probably get more use out of it. Cheers.
