bobber Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 as a baby present I'll give you and your wife a day of paddling lessons on the buffalo river.. let me know what weekend works best for you!!.... <*)))))))>< * AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION CERTIFIED CANOE, and SWIFT WATER RESCUE INSTRUCTOR.*
KCRIVERRAT Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Eric... I bought an Old Town 174. The things just over 17 feet long and is able to hold lots of gear. I've done lots of overnighters in a Old Town 169 and have done fine. Just me and my buddy though. You'd be amazed what you can get in a canoe and make it work. Glad to hear you're already planning trips with your kid! HUMAN RELATIONS MANAGER @ OZARK FISHING EXPEDITIONS

Cool bobber! That would be pretty awesome. I'll hold you to that so expect to hear from me one of these years... Eric... I bought an Old Town 174. KCRIVERRAT Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 It's heavy. I bought an extended hitch from Cabela's to haul it. Just put the tailgate down on the truck (Ford F-150 FX4) and slide it up on the bed rather than use the first hitch I bought which I had to place it on the cab. Go to Old Town's web site. They've got all the specs there. HUMAN RELATIONS MANAGER @ OZARK FISHING EXPEDITIONS
eric1978 Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 I've been looking at the specs, and I think I've narrowed it down to the Disco 169, Penobscot 17, or the Spirit II. I like the dimensions of the Disco just for the stability and weight capacity, but it's the heaviest one at 85 pounds. That's no biggie, though, I'll never use it as a solo. But I do wish they made that canoe in Royalex...then it'd be perfect. The Penobscots and Spirits are very expensive...I'd have to find one of those used.
Gavin Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Another to consider......the new Wenonah Northfork 17'....I think its their answer to the OT Disco 169 and it comes with better seats and a slightly lower retail price. $949 v $989.
eric1978 Posted June 2, 2010 Author Posted June 2, 2010 That looks like a good one, too. You're right, it's almost exactly the dimensions of the Disco 169, except bow, stern and freeboard are about 2-3 lower on the Northfork, and it's 2 pounds heavier. Also says it has an inch of rocker. I'm assuming the Disco has none...anyone know?
woodman Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 For what it's worth .....make you're own flat back.. http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r302/scrawford_photos/
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 The Disco has some rocker, but I can't tell you how much, I can tell you it isn't enough to make any difference. No one mentioned the 160 Guide, its very stable and cheaper. Its a tank like the others mentioned, heavy and hard to paddle with a big load, but any canoe with a wide beam is hard to paddle, period. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
