Gone Fishing Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I kind of liked it when it was. I know you guys are looking for the giants this lake has. I think it was funner fishing for them rather then flying up the banks looking for a big-un. It kept everyone fishing hard knowing a 3 1/2 pounder had a good chance of getting a check.

My issue is more with boat traffic not the time of year because I love fishing in June. I caught 17 keepers in 2 days with 7 over 3lbs and that was good for zero checks...3.5 or less got 12 checks out of 70. It was borderline dangerous running around out there especially running back and forth to one weigh-in location which is why early April would be better plus there won't be any site fishing then.
Champ188 Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I will always complain (and many others do)about any tournaments during the spawn and I wish the state of Missouri had a no tournament rule from 2nd week of April until the 2nd week of May...which would cover things most years. Catch-n-release only during those times would make our lakes even better IMO and I consider myself a good site fisherman. BUT you are right there will be plenty of tournaments site fishing and I will fish the KVD regardless of when it is. I'm not opposed to closing things down for a month during the spawn, but let's close it to all fishing period ... not just tournaments.

Have to think this would sit badly with resort owners, chambers of comm., guides, etc. Not that there isn't merit in it, but for better or worse $$$ makes things move. Hard to fill resort rooms in early April with family vaca's when the kids are still at school desks and water is too cold to ski. There would be a lot of tmts and fishermen traveling to any of the border states that did not follow suit...OK, AR, etc. Unfortunately their money would travel with them. That time of year is kind of like the windfall that hits western KS when bird season opens, hard thing to balance. I put a high value on a fish, but I get paid filling prescriptions, not resort rooms.
Hogfan Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Anyone here what the big'un was caught on and what area of the lake?

I am saying making it catch-n-release only on bass for those 4 weeks...similar to what Minnesota does in some areas. Everyone can fish like normal just release bass as soon as you catch them.
Tfsh4bass Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Anyone here what the big'un was caught on and what area of the lake? WAY up the White on a mop jig in around 8ft of water
Champ188 Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 dtrs5kprs is exacly right. Would hate to see resort owners and guides be shut out for a month during a critical time of year for them. Honestly, I'd be willing to give up my tournament fishing for a short spell during bedding season but I don't think MDC could effectively do it by setting a blanket statewide period. Seems to me they'd need to zone the state and set different dates according to normal spawn times for particular regions. I know someone is probably going to bring up the old catch, measure, record and release suggestion for tournaments during the spawn, i.e. hold a "paper derby." That may be fine for bass clubs but in my opinion, that would never fly for bigger-money tournaments.
