oneshot Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 No matter how much anyone makes fun of you or how Hot you get. My Son I can't believe he makes fun of me considering he works on the Niangua River all Summer.Plain and simple things happen so fast. I just noticed I don't have mine on in my Avatar and this was when I was with my Son and he was making fun of me.But he also makes fun of me watching my weight even though me Doctor said I wasn't going to live long if I didn't lose some. oneshot

When I got out of that mess, I realized how fast it can happen and zipped and buckeled that vest before I got back on my yak. Trust me people, it can happen real fast and you won't have time to put it on. Or zip and buckle it. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
gotmuddy Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 We probably should when we canoe but we don't. I would definitely suggest wearing one if your not a strong swimmer. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
jeb Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Good advice. I recently put some money into Mustang self-inflating/manual PFD's so I could wear them 100% of the time I'm in the boat. I'm a very strong swimmer, but that doesn't do you much good if you're knocked out or disoriented from a crash. Buy 'em, wear 'em! John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha

I figure if I hook a big lunker and have the big one landing it I don't want my wife to wait until I float up. Once you get use to wearing a self-inflator it's second nature. Leaves some weird tan lines though. www.drydock516.com

Members Fishes in Trees Posted June 28, 2010 Members Posted June 28, 2010 A few years ago i fell out of the boat. In March. In 46 degree water. It was windy and I got off the trolling motor for a second while I grabbed a different rod and the wind blew me sideways and over the sides I went. It is a strange feeling looking up and seeing the bottom of your boat, several feet over your head. On a positive note, I was wearing Frog Toggs, which are kind of loose and puffy. When I went over they had enough air in them that I shot straight back up to the surface. Then adrenaline kicked in and 3 strokes later I was hanging on the side of my boat. When I first got the boat I practiced getting back into the boat (in the summertime, in 86 degree water) so I knew how to get back into the boat. The moral of the story is that when I got home I pulled out the Bass Pro catalog and immediately ordered an auto inflating PFD. I've since upgraded to a hydrostatic type. It was a wake up call and should you fish by yourself alot like I do, you probably ought to get one.
bobber Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 IT'S SO SAD TO HEAR THE DUMB REPLYS ABOUT "I'M A GOOD SWIMMER ".... GO AHEAD , HOLD A DEEP BREATH!!!!....... THAT'S HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU DIE! <*)))))))>< * AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION CERTIFIED CANOE, and SWIFT WATER RESCUE INSTRUCTOR.*
Coldspring Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I'm not macho, not a good swimmer, and don't think it won't happen to me, but I'm not wearing one in a canoe. Sorry, can't stand them. Now, before you go thinking I'm stupid, I only canoe in the summer and not in high waters. It depends on the individual and situation. If a situation was to arise where I felt uncomfortable, yes, I would wear my PFD. I do get a kick out of seeing people wearing there PFDs on a river that's 20 feet wide and a foot deep, see it all the time. I'm actually more scared of drugged-out, drunken river trash than I am of having an accident. Also get scared of certain river patrols, even more than the river trash. I don't have any interest in whitewater kayaking. If I have to wear a helmet to do something, I won't do it. This probably has something to do with the reason I don't ride motorcycles or rock climb. My body is too fragile and mortal to find enjoyment in such things. I also go backpacking w/o telling anyone where I'm going and don't take a cellphone. How did people ever survive w/o cellphones? Figure there's more chance of me getting attacked by a wild razorback hog than anything. Just do what makes you feel comfortable. I don't really feel comfortable driving down the highway, but I'm numb to it.
Gilly Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I darn near went head first out of the boat this weekend. We made a run up the B side of Stockton, from Hawker to Ruark. Fished for a little bit and then decided it was too hot, headed back for the trailer. Boat wouldn't start.....what the heck. Pumped the ball up again, boat started. Got up on plane and the boat quit. darn. Pumped the ball and the boat started. Same thing, got up on plane engine started cutting out, throttled back......or so I thought. Went back, pumped the ball and the engine came up to 3/4 throttle instantly. darn near went off the back end. Me being pizzed and stupid at the same time. You know how you have those moments when things just flash before you in an instant? Yeah it was one of those....but I had my PFD on so I would have been in okay shape had I gone over. At least I'd like to think so. note: The mechanic thinks it might be crappy gas or water in the fuel. Just filled the dang thing up. www.drydock516.com
