Fished Baptist Camp today and caught at least 40. Perhaps more, and it was the best day I have had on the Current so far. 90% of the fish came on egg patterns (either orange or pink), so in a way I feel like I was cheating. The other fish came on Prince nymphs, flash Princes and green copper johns. The egg patterns were like crack-cocaine to these fish. Nearly every cast in every deep hole I was into a fish. I caught a very nice brown (16 inches) right along the bank---and that seemed to be the key---fish across stream against the banks that were cut out by the flooding. I used a thingamabobber on my furled leader about 4 feet above my first fly. Had a dropper on all day about 8 inches below the lead fly. 3x floro to the first fly, 5x to the dropper. A large split shop got the flies down quickly.

I have a question--I'd like to fish my way down to Ashley Creek, but I am not sure how to get below the sharp S bend in the River. I get as far as the tree that was sawed recently right across from the very sandy, large gravel bar. I was able to cross there, but I didn't see a foot trail at all. How do I get below that hole? Do I have to bushwack it? I thought I read somewhere that there is a trail on that side of the river. Does anyone know?

Sounds like a good time.

I've had the same problem getting around that area to fish downstream... I suppose you could bushwack around there, but it wouldn't be easy. I can't think of any other way besides swimming, which wouldn't actually be too bad in this heat B)

There is a trail that leads from Baptist down to Ashley, but it crosses the river at one point and stays on the Ashley Creek side until you have to cross it. It will be very overgrown this time of year, but you really don't need the trail. You can wade fish it down to Ashley without being out of the water too much.

40 fish eh? Nice day.

Jah .... that is a stellar day for BC for sure. A 40+ fish day at BC is incredible. Awesome. Good job.

Cheers. PC

JAH,

That is a great day on the Current any day. Just wondering, was the water off color? I'm asking because of the tippet size you used is a lot larger than I would use this time of the year. I would normally use 6x or 7x.

I wish I was there.

I thought the same thing as you (i.e. use smaller tippet), but after talking to the guys at Hargroves, they said use 3x or 4x floro and I'd be fine. I was skeptical when they said this, but I always listen to them because they know infinitely more than me. The water was gin clear and low and the 3x/4x was making no difference to the fish. Honestly I would have only caught about 10 had it not been for the orange or pink globall. I was there for 6 hours. This has been the same story the last 3 times down there---globall tears them up. But 3 weeks ago I was knocking them dead on a combination of prices with a green caddis larva dropper. They wouldn't touch it the last 3 times, however, so I had to switch to egg pattern. Funny how that works---once you think you figure it out, it doesn't work the next time.

I have been there four times in the last 2 weeks, 5 hours at a time, and I can count on one hand the number of fish that I saw rise. Granted I am usually there in the middle of the day.

Congrats on a great day....sounds like your getting dialed in on that creek...My wife and I floated the Cedar to Akers Stretch on Friday. The river had a good amount of traffic on it but we caught 4 each...6 smallmouth, a chain pickeral, and a goggle eye. My wife was fishing a 4" Curly tail, and I was fishing a Zoom Fluke. Rigged up the fly rods at Welch and fly fished below there.....No trout.

Stayed with a bunch down at Pulltite on Friday night and floated from Akers to Pulltite on Saturday....Fishing was a complete waste of time...had 3-4 strikes but nothing big enough to eat a 5" Zoom Fluke. Good float but I had a run in with some overzealous canoe jockey from Jadwin Canoe Rental...apparently he thinks he owns the beach at Pulltite cuz he didnt like that I pulled my boat into "his" spot...he wanted exclusive use of the access...and I told him what I thought about it.

He may pay to use it, but its federal land and its mine as well as his... And I let him know it. They cant occupy the whole darn ramp for hours and demand that private boats...pull out downstream way far away from the parking lot...

Closest I've been to a fist fight in a long time. I cant recall the last time I used Jadwin for a shuttle or anything....but I'd urge you all to boycott the place..
