Al Agnew Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I'm considering selling one of my Old Town Penobscot 16 ft. tandem canoes (I have two of them). The one I wish to sell has some problems. The bottom is very worn, down to the ABS substrate in some cracks. Needs those cracks filled in with JB Weld or other epoxy--I'm trying Bondo fiberglass resin on another canoe and will see how that works. Adding skid plates would also help. And you can obtain ABS paint to cover up the other scrapes. It also has a slight bow in the middle. On the other hand, it's still a very serviceable canoe of a design that I think is about as good as it gets for Ozark streams. It's Royalex, 16 feet long, 33 inches wide at the widest point, weighs in the neighborhood of 60 pounds. It's green. Asking $300. They retail new for over $1000. I'm an hour south of St. Louis if you are thinking about coming to see it or pick it up. Reply by PM and I'll send you my phone number and email addy.
Coldspring Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Happen to have any pics of the bottom? Does it have seats, yokes, and thwarts?
Al Agnew Posted June 28, 2010 Author Posted June 28, 2010 Cane seats are still in pretty good shape, but could use some varnish. Thwarts and the middle thwart/carrying yoke is still good (also could use varnish). It has aluminum gunwales that are in good shape. Nothing wrong with it except the worn bottom. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.
Coldspring Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Okay, will look for the pictures. Maybe it would give me an excuse to finally come up that way and float the Meremac and Courtois.
Flysmallie Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I'm trying Bondo fiberglass resin on another canoe and will see how that works. The only problem that you will have with fiberglass resin is that it cures to a hard rigid repair. It will not flex like a quality epoxy resin.
eric1978 Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Hmmm...wish it was a 17 footer. I'd be all over it.
Al Agnew Posted June 28, 2010 Author Posted June 28, 2010 Here are pictures of the bottom. The rear has a larger area of damage, but you could probably cover most or all of it with commercially available skid plate. The front end has a smaller area of damage.
Coldspring Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 The boat looks like it's been loaded down a few times on a swift river. Tempting. Have a pic of the topside and gunwales?
jdmidwest Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Al, autograph it and sell it as an original, tried and true, fishing machine by the legendary artist, Al Agnew. You might get more for it. I would like to see the top side also, I have a friend looking for a trapping boat this winter. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S.
