Used My New Fly Rod For The First Time, And Caught My First Fish!

I bought a fly rod/reel from Cabelas a couple weeks ago and this evening was the first chance I have had to try it out. I took it to one of our ponds and tied a mosquito fly on and caught this on my first cast:

its tiny but it was fun. That is a florida strain largemouth bass. Same pond produced a 8lb bass for me this spring on a wacky rigged yum dinger.

Mosquitoes are usually tied on size 18 or 20 hooks. It looks like that fly was tied on a size 2 hook and that fish is 16 inches long.

Not too shabby for your first fly caught fish.

I think it is an Alaskan Mosquito.

that bass was only about 5-6" long. very likely born this year. I want to get some poppers, I think I could catch a bigger bass then.

that is the next step. I cant ever get to blue ribbon fly shop when they are open though

Glad you're "hooked". The long stick is too much fun. Pick up some beadhead woolies as well. Olive has been hot for me lately. Oh, and maybe some Chernobyl ants, black and yellow.

Most places that sell fishing equip will usually carry a few poppers. My favorites are Sneaky Pete and Round Dinny. You could even find them at a Wally World, Target, or Kmart if you have one close.

Uh oh dude, be careful with the fly fishing- the next thing you know youll be buying waders, fly boxes, more rods, more reels, nippers, nets, little doodads and other well marketed crap- and then if you get a tying vise youll be in a whole new world of hurt.
