I've never caught a 10 pound trout, so I couldn't answer that. But I would contend that a 20 inch smallie caught on UL gear could just as easily head straight into a tangled root wad as a 10 pound trout, and just sit there, leaving you helpless.

What, afraid to go for a swim? lol

So would you extend your argument to anyone using less than 10lb tippet at, say, Taneycomo? (if memory serves correctly, the state record trout were caught on UL and 4 or 6lb, right? The brown was over 30 pounds, eh?

That fish was caught out of a bowl of gravel, where apparently it had no place to run and hide...kinda like hooking a fish in the middle of the ocean. Plus I seem to recall that fish died...eh?

You're exhausting. You should get back on your Ritalin.

Just to repeat one thing...margin for error. Sure, you can land a 20 inch smallmouth on 4 pound line. Probably won't hurt it even if you fight it for several minutes. But, if you're fishing in decent cover, most 20 inch class fish will attempt to get into the cover. And with UL, not only the line but the "wimpy" rod will pretty much limit you on what you can do to keep the fish out of the cover. I don't mind losing fish, but I don't like leaving lures in their faces...seems to me that just ain't good for them.

Billy Westmorland, the famous Dale Hollow Reservoir smallmouth angler, used UL and 4 pound line and caught all kinds of huge smallies. But that was a big, deep reservoir with little woody cover. With the limitations of UL gear and especially the limitations on the lures you can most effectively use, it simply is not suited for seeking BIG smallies on Ozark streams. None of the guys I know who regularly catch big smallmouth use UL.

But to each his own. If using UL is fun for you, who am I or anybody else to tell you not to use it!

I went to Cabela's yesterday decided on a med graphite rod and open face reel and 8lb vanish line. First time I tried spooling it got that line twist I followed direction and laid spool on floor for spinning reels. I might of reeled to fast I'm thinking. I caught it early at least. If any tips out there let me know? I also picked up some itsy bitsy tubes so thinks for the tip. I got the 1/8 tube jig heads and I also picked up a differnt salted tube bait and some hooks that you texas rig the tubes.
