A lot of my materials are now almost useless as I have a lot of chartreuse items that I used for smallmouth up in Wisconsin's tannin stained waters. Now that I'm here in the Ozarks, the water is too clear for them most of the time. I have a lot of flies tied with chartreuse that I can't really use down here.

Wrong! Try that chartreuse out the next time you go...it'll work.

I had to set up shop in the closet...two cats and tying materials don't mix. rolleyes.gif

Thats funny, my favorite poppers are a chartreuse Round Dinny and a Chartreuse Slider. I also use chartreuse in my blue gill flies, foam bugs, and trout eggs. I use white, gold, purple, yellow too with much success. I also toss a White/Chartreuse Rapala this time of year that works great too.

You might want to dig it out and try some different colors locally, you might be surprised.

Well, I guess I'll have to try it again. I haven't had any luck with chartreuse when I got down here. I figured the water was too clear. So when I got my tying desk set up, I started tying up a lot of olive, brown, black etc.

I wonder if these will work.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

I wouldn't use chartreuse as a bottom bouncing bait...use your natural colors for that. But anytime you're fishing a bait on or just under the surface, and the fish are looking up at it, especially with a background of trees, chartreuse is a great color. I can't tell you how many fish I've caught in gin-clear water on a big ugly chartreuse spinnerbait.

I dont understand how come every one thinks small mouth in the ozarks are picky? They are the baddest things in their invironment, if it moves without their permission, it deserves to die! They're not trout that are scared of their shadow.

To be honest, if you are concerned about saving money by tying your own flies, don't bother. The main reason 90% of us tie our own flies is because we want the pleasure of catching fish on something we created ourselves. There is nothing like the feeling of that first fish you catch on a fly you tied yourself, and the feeling continues with subsequent fish. But to tie in order to save money... well... unless you use EVERY bit of feather, fur, and mylar you buy, and then use ever single fly, you're not going to save money. Commercial tiers only make money due to the fact they can tie fast and use all their materials. Otherwise, it's money down the drain.

So, in the end, don't begin tying to save money. Begin tying to be creative and control your fly box.

I was reading through this topic wondering why nobody had bothered to share some good fly tying sites or books either. YouTube is great, but there is so much more out there. I'm glad Leonard finally spoke up and shared some stuff. Here is my addition.

He is my coach on the youth team as well as a member of the Adult Team USA. Some of his flies are quite complicated but many are incredibly simple. (Pheasant Tail and Hare&Copper) Ignore the hooks that he uses as they are quite expensive and some can be rather hard to come across as they are from across the pond. Also, many of his bead heads are tied with a Tungsten. Don't worry about that.

The best of luck to you! :)

The 2 in the middle and the lower one should get you some action in the Spring. From now till cold weather, top water rules.
