Stump bumper Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Glad to hear it, and you gained some vaulable knowledge in the process. It is good to have friends like that instead of those who play vedio games all day. Mechanics have good intentions but sometimes don't understand that a lot of use have more time on our hands than money. Glad you are back on the water, now find some bass and post it up. I've been up in the tail waters and catching some big whites but need a good black bass report.
fishinwrench Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 I'm glad that you're glad, I suppose, but keep in mind that a loss of compression also means a loss of intake vaccuum, which means less fuel and lubrication and more friction heat to the effected cylinder. So if you plan to keep running it don't get too far from the ramp. As it is now you may be able to hone and re-ring without even having to bore the cyl. out. If you keep running it there no doubt that the price of the eventual rebuild will increase. If you want to tackle it on your own I'd be glad to offer support if you have any questions or run into any problems.
J-Doc Posted August 20, 2010 Author Posted August 20, 2010 I called Wolf today. I'm going to take it by there Saturday morning so he can take a look at the powerhead before I put the head back on. He said if it runs good, run it. I've had others tell me that too. It's a matter of "money per value x age" factor that makes me want to keep running it as is. I'm going to several mechanics, show them the powerhead without the head on and get an average of opinions. If money wasn't so tight right now, I'd already have it the shop for a rebuild. J-Doc Posted October 23, 2012 Author Posted October 23, 2012 SO here is an update..... I'm going to do the full rebuild and looking at local shops again. Last time I posted here, I took the boat to Wolf and he said "run it till it burns up". Not great advice IMO. I installed the new head gaskets and took the motor out for a run. Boat ran fine. Checked the compression again and it was down to 55psi on the bad cylinder so I put the boat up and haven't run the motor at all until yesterday. I only ran the motor on the trailer long enough to crank it. Carb needs a full rebuild/carb kit. So, I'm looking at places to get quotes on a rebuild. I'm not confident in doing it myself and I really don't have the time, a shop to do it in, etc. I'd just assume pay a little more and have a 1yr warranty with it vs. doing it myself based on advise and a repair manual. I don't have the specialized tools or knowledge that comes from years of experience. My options so far are looking at King's Marine, Wolf, Mobile Marine and High Performance Watercraft (full of old boats past Prarrie Creek on left on way to 12 bridge. Bella Vista Marine was the highest by far last time and had not even seen the motor and shot me a price over the phone in a 2min conversation which made me a bit cautious. Wolf's yard right now is packed to the gills with boats so I don't think he will need the money or want to mess with a rebuild. King's Marine has a good rep and had the lowest cost by far, (about 2K less than Bella Vista Marine cheaper) and I don't know anything about HP Watercraft but their online reviews sound good. He's also full of older boats so he must have competative costs. Anyone have some suggestions on who to go to based on repair experience/cost? Need marine repair? Members GENTLE Posted October 23, 2012 Members Posted October 23, 2012 Might give Bryce at White River Marine a try, from what dealings I've had with him, and other people I know,he seems to be a straight shooter. And if there's a cheaper, feasible, option he'll do it.
J-Doc Posted November 20, 2012 Author Posted November 20, 2012 For the record.... I'm taking my boat to Fishingwrench for a full rebuild. I think he's the man for the job and he will get all my business going forward. Thanks to those that recommended him. Anyone that appreciates old outboards as much or more than me is my type of guy. Can't wait! I can hear my old Rude roaring already. Lol! Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. Members Bass Ivy Posted November 28, 2012 Members Posted November 28, 2012 You could have a rod bearing that has failed. That is what my Mariner 200 did. The rod bolt backed out and once it nocked the rod bearing out it the rod started eating into the crank. The compression was low on that one cylinder. I need to talk to Fishingwrench myself. I would like someone to help me out with putting a good crank in there and a rod. Might need another piston in that hole also. My motor ran for awhile like that. I lost the lower unit too. The lower unit was actually what locked it up in the end.
J-Doc Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 Let's hope not. I think its just a bad piston ring and the rebore and new cylinders, Carb kit and gaskets is all I need. A full Carb rebuild might not be a bad idea but only if he thinks I need it. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2 Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. fishinwrench Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Carb bowl gaskets and needle valve need to be refreshed and float settings need to be reset...so Yep, it's getting the carbs overhauled. As well as the fuel pump and water pump.
