gotmuddy Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 This weekend my wife and I took our riverboat from riverton down to myrtle yesterday evening and today. we camped just a few miles down the river, at the base of a really long hole on a small gravel bar. My overall thoughts of the river is that it is a great place to fish but not the most scenic I have found. NFOW and buffalo far surpass this stretch of the eleven point IMO. Most of it is due to all the downed trees which I imagine is from the ice storm last year. We only had to drag in one spot and only for about 30 ft, but there were some very tough obstacles for my 9.9 to handle(trees in narrow spots). Thankfully I am pretty good with the 9.9 and no accidents happened. Onto the fishing. I got up at 5:30 and fished the long hole we were camped at the base of. Right off the bat I caught a....giant minnow/shiner on a black torpedo About 10 minutes later I caught a decent smallie (13") on a minnow pattern spinnerbait. 30 min later I caught the biggest fish of the day, a 16.5" beast on a wiggle wart(the same color as the one I have been pounding bass on the white river and crooked creek!). No pic sadly since it was dark still. I went up in a small creek and caught a new species of fish for me, a chain pickerel. At the time I had no idea what it was and I thought it was some kind of pike. It hit the spinnerbait. After fishing back down to camp I woke up the wife and we took camp down and we fished the hole again. at the mouth of the creek my wife caught a pretty 15" rainbow on the wiggle wart . we caught a few smallies and goggleyes on the way down, nothing serious, at least not until we stopped for lunch at the base of a shoal. while waiting for the charcoal to get ready to cook I was fishing with a crawfish pattern dt4 when I hooked a monster. It had no trouble stripping line from my johnny morris and after about a minute it spit the crankbait out. After a few minutes skulking I got out the spinnerbait to try a hail mary pass and hooked either another big fish or the same fish again. either way it was a porker for a 15" smallie. It was a awesome fight. We caught a few more smallies, all on either a crank or a spinnerbait. Overall it was a great day, and I cannot wait to float it again. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
flytyer57 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Dang it!! The vans body work is pissing me off (although it's coming out pretty good.) I should have gone with ya. Next itme, I'm in. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

Terry Beeson Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Sounds like a great trip... Then again, anytime you're fishing it's a great trip... eric1978 Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Looks like a good one gm. Nice smallie and rainbow, and it's cool you got a pickerel out of it, too.

Brian Sloss Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Nice smallie! How far down river from Riverton did you catch that trout? www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
gotmuddy Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 probably 3 miles or so. I did not have my phone(gps) with us. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
jdmidwest Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 The scenic parts are on the upper river. All the big bluffs, caves, and wilderness are on the stretch from Cane Bluff to Riverton. Around Halls Bay, the river starts running thru fields more and becomes more open. But if you are bass fishing, you are on one of the hottest spots right now. I stopped at the Narrows yesterday on the way back from Spring River and the lot was full of trucks with trailers.
