gotmuddy Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 It's my understanding this is a group of citizens (Center for Biological Diversity) petitioning the government (EPA) for action. That is how a democracy works, right? they get their money from the government. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 See, THAT makes sense to me. You're not irrational, just looking out for your own interests. WAIT... You would seriously rather strap 30 lbs of animal guts (not just heart and liver and that, but the intestines, skin, bones, stomach contents, feces, bladder, etc) on your back and carry it 5 miles out of the field than carry a pound or so of non-toxic bullets INTO the field?! You and I have very different ideas of common sense We're talking about an area in CA and AZ, not the whole US. Would I want to, of course not. Would I want to change all the loads in my guns, rebore all the leades in my rifles, no. I think given the choices, I think I would worry about the gut pile. The truth is it doesn't sound like you have much of a dog in this hunt. Lets face it switching from lead wire or a piece of split shot isn't going to have much effect on your sport. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
eric1978 Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 they get their money from the government. I'm sorry to keep picking on you gotmuddy, but you keep posting inaccurate comments. The Center for Biological Diversity is NOT funded by the government, but rather by 255,000 members who donate to their causes. You should do some research before you make assumptions. You should also check out their website...you might actually enjoy it. A couple stories right on their homepage are about things you might support...protecting Montana grayling, and another one about what they're doing to protect a steelhead fishery on the 8,000 acre Stanford University campus. http://www.biologica....org/index.html
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I haven't seen any evidence that the Center gets money from the government. Where did you get that info? They are prone to exaggeration and what some would call over the top solutions to biological problems. On the other hand they seem to avoid some more obvious ones. To prevent collisions between ships and whales they want speed limits and exclusion from migration routes. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Fly_Guy Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Look up wikipedia's article on lead poisoning. (and yes, myself and other scientists use wikipedia for an occasional quick reference - it is more reliable than you would think) i like the idea of banning lead in splitshots and other weights as wayne proposed. It seems strange to me that a logical move would meet such resistance. Why not do little things to protect yourself and the environment? (besides this being the land of the free, of course) Perhaps some of us have been sucking on our split-shots too long? see link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Decreased_Brain_Volume_from_Lead_Exposure.jpg (cited in PLoS Medicine)

eric1978 Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 A website by them which says the polar bears are dying(gives absolutely no stats or any kind of proof) and gives the reason as simply "global warming" What other "proof" do you need other than the fact that their habitat is melting, getting smaller, and breaking into little chunks and floating off to sea? The degradation of that habitat is a result of global warming, at least according to the VAST majority of scientists. Sorry, they do not get **all** their money from the government, they also get it from left leaning "foundations" like the ted turner foundation and the Sierra Club. As far as I can see, they don't get **any** money from the government...let me know when you find some info that proves otherwise, not that it makes a difference to me anyway. And Ted Turner and the Sierra Club can give their money to whomever they please. How is that relevant to anything? The validity of an organization is based on who contributes to it? If that's your criteria, I've got some great investor/contributor to organization match-ups for you I'll send in a PM (wouldn't want to upset anyone).

The degradation of that habitat is a result of global warming, at least according to the VAST majority of scientists. please show some proof that ice is melting and that we are causing it. In fact please prove global warming. BTW, proof has come out that VAST amounts of scientists were misquoted and paid off to LIE about the truth. The validity of an organization is based on who contributes to it? Yes it is. If they get their money from groups whose sole purpose are to stop people from doing anything they do not like(which includes all forms of fishing) then logic dictates that the organization will do the same. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

I'm done.
