vanven Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Approximately when is "the run"? Supposedly when you start seeing Monarch butterflies, you should see browns. Someone posted that on here. I do have a monarch under my passenger windshield wiper from this morning... -Jerod

Fly_Guy Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Look for MDC out there trying to catch them for the eggs... or do they not do that anymore? I'd like to hook a larger brown trout this year, but I'm reluctant to do it during spawning time. I somehow doubt they have productive spawns though... Perhaps some tips for quickly landing and releasing fish would be in order? What's the max leader size y'all like to use that gets the trout in and off the hook quickly (while not being too large) - can you go as high as 5X or 4X?

I would like to wish you luck in your pursuit of a large brown, as well as everyone else on OAF. In missouri, and especially at taney, you will be hard pressed to find a large brown unless it "is" spawn time. I suppose that "boat" fishermen have an opportunity year round, but not the "wade" fishermen. You are "not" putting the future of missouri's trout fishing at risk, at taney, by fishing at spawn time. Be respectful of any large fish you attempt to catch. It is a game of one on one. I don't think there is a magic formula for releasing a fish in good health. Do not drag them across the rocks, and take care in your hook removal. If the fish is foul hooked, break him off immediately. I have released hundreds of big fish with minor consequences. As far as tippet size, I like the challenge of light tippets. Regardless of the outcome, I am the winner each and every time that I hook up with a large fish. Keep us posted in your quest for a large brown.
jjtroutbum Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 There ia a large number if big browns in the hatchery runs now that I haven't noticed in previous years. Maybe they were there and I just didn't notice,or something. I imagine they are collecting some eggs from them though. Maybe they are just getting that many more from the ladder that was installed Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks.
