Members Ozarkroots Posted September 13, 2010 Members Posted September 13, 2010 I put in at a little campground off of J where the little Niangua runs into the lake....tool my jet up river a little and then fished the lake a little....didn't catch but three fish! What the heck?! Does that area suck or what? I did however see a million gar!
fishinwrench Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Does that area suck or what? Not if you're into catching Gar You're right though, I can't think of anyplace I've ever been where the gar are as thick all year long. They truly need to be thinned out somehow.

(NN Hwy.) between Climax Springs and Macks Creek. Usually some decent fishing up that way. Haven't caught anything huge, but at least you can usually catch fish. What the heck?! Does that area suck or what? I did however see a million gar! I have fished that area about three times a year for the last ten years. My best friend's family has a place there about 2 to 3 miles upstream of Big Island. We always catch fish there including when we were younger and restricted to a paddle boat. I have caught dozens of 5+ pound bass there and when bass aren't biting we always manage to catch cats or crappie. "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." Members FishinJack Posted September 16, 2010 Members Posted September 16, 2010 The problem with the extreme upper ends of these rivers and creeks is they are very tempormental. The problem you ran into to is the dam (Bagnel) was sucking water down. It really affects those super shallow fish. Usually this time of the year water generation is limited. However recently we have recieved a fair amount of rain allowing UE to make some money through pulling the water down. Now this isn't a bad thing for fishing. But it changes things instead of fishing super shallow you most likely would have done a lot better fishing deep points. Take avantage of the current. Water level is always iportant, and it changes daily. Don't get me wrong I love fishing shallow cover in the flats this time of the year, but you can't be to hard headed and only limit yourself to fishing in water only three feet deep. I'd bet if you went back there today things would be back to normal. Jack's Guide Service www.FishingLakeoftheOzarks.com
Bird Watcher Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 An old aquaintance has some land just a mile past the Green mill bridge there. I spent a fair amount of time up there turkey and deer hunting with him. We would take a little jon boat with a TM down there from time to time and catch plenty of crappie. We never tried fishing for anyhing else. That sure is a pretty valley where it stretches up to the NW. My friend always called it the "pittman bottom". he had a ton of stories about it..he had grown up on the place and part of his land was a century farm.
