This was some good information as I have had the same situation happen to me.

If your tippet is too long the weight of the fly can colapse your loop and cause the fly to rub your leader.

You should have been down here yesterday at 6:30 AM when I hooked that HUGE brown trout below the dam @ Norfork!!! I didn't have a net big enough for him so I tried to get him up on shore and he got off not 3 feet from me.

And yes, I was using a 9' leader with about 2 feet of tippet.

I changed to a 4X leader that is about 7½' and added about 2 ' of tippet.

Golf is for guys who live in an area where there are no trout. Beating the crap out of your buddies for money is ALMOST as good as fly fishing. And it's better than nothing.

I've gone to using bulk flourocarbon for tippet material. I use Vanish in 6#, 4#, and 2#. Caught 250 yard filler spools on sale at WallyWorld a few years ago for $5. I think regular price is $10.

The 4# is 4x diameter, works great!

I've thought about going up to 4X but I'm not sure if the fish will be turned off by that size tippet or not. I can't afford flouro right now.
