fishinwrench Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 My wife and I are the minority. We just have local channels. Now that everything is digital we get 9 or 10 channels . When we had cable and dish I spent most of my time surfing trying to deciede what to watch. We have been without cable for almost 8 years now, dont miss it at all. Ditto, I haven't had cable, or any other broadcast TV since March of 2006 and I do not miss it one bit. I notice that the way I view things (world events especially) differs from those that watch TV everyday. It either brainwashes people via the repeated mentioning of certain words or phrases...or I'm just an idiot. I know, I left myself wide open with that remark... But for as many times as everyone has heard the word "terrorist" or "weapons of mass destruction", or "global warming", I'd kinda expect for someone to have actually witnessed one or the other in real life. Kinda makes me wonder what fears are real and what fears are planted. Have you ever noticed that the faces on TV media are always giving answers to questions the people never asked....but sidestep giving answers to the questions they do ? The irony of that speaks for itself I think.
jdmidwest Posted October 8, 2010 Author Posted October 8, 2010 I took another look at my contract...it states 325MB a "day". I know it sounds like a lot but it goes fast when they include all the downloads used while browsing. Each page you load adds to it. I used five percent of my daily allowance just reading OAF while drinking my coffee this morning and I still have a fantasy football team to maintain....another five percent there... I also run a website for a non-profit and go through a 30 to 50MB everytime I have to update through the Host company. I have learned to take advantage of the "free" hours of 1AM and 6AM. Just kind of sucks when you have no other options. I have a landline but the phone company says they don't support highspeed net in my area. One mile north and one mile south I would be OK....kind of dumb. Here is what I live with, throttling, but it beats dialup and was only a few dollars more. Good news, there may be a wireless internet coming soon for around $15 a month due to stimulus money. Economy Plan Download Thresholds Level Total Download Download Speed Level 0 384K Level 1 450MB 300K Level 2 900MB 210K Level 3 1300MB 174K Level 4 1800MB 134K Level 5 2250MB 90K Level 6 2700MB 48K Level 7 3150MB 30K "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. I do like it for trash tv with larger than life shows and comedy. I like having a good laugh at times with Comedy Central and others. I do like a little distraction from the real world at times. And a football game from time to time. Dish has always been lame on hunting and fishing shows, I watch them at Dad's on his Direct TV all of the time. Trout Commander Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I haven't had cable for two and a half years. We do get the channels the you used to be able to pick up with rabbit ears for free through our apartment complex though, so all I see is news. The only channels I even miss are ESPN, Discovery, History and The Outdoor Channel (and TBS now for the playoffs). I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.
