You all are asking for a list based upon a figure of speech. I have no list, was just wanting to stir the pot a bit. I have seen the elitist fly fishermen many times and they deliberately eschew gear fishing for the reason that it isn't sporting. It annoys me and I am not against someone using bait, fly or lure as long as it is legal. I am, however, against people looking down at someone as happened in Ollie's post.

I understand what you're saying, and no offense taken. I'm sure there are fly fisherman out there somewhere who look down on spin-fishers, but I am not one of them, and I don't know of anyone who is. I think there may have been a time when there were more fly fishing snobs out there, but I can't say that for sure either since I have only been fly fishing seriously for a couple years myself. The way it is now, most of the fly fisherman I talk to don't in any way feel they are above spin fisherman, and I feel the same way.

I choose to spend about 95% of my time on the water these days fly fishing (which means that I also spend about 5% of my time spin-fishing). But that's my business, not anyone else's. I'm never going to ridicule someone spin-fishing on a Blue Ribbon stream or anywhere else as long as they are staying within the law, and frankly I don't know of anyone who would.

The myth of the holier than thou fly fisherman is largely that- a myth, with a few inevitable exceptions.

I think you are right in saying it is more myth than anything, but I can see a bunch of FF thinking "here comes a corn chucker down to the C&R zone" when they saw me. Especially on the Norfolk where there is a lot of bait fisherman also. It was apparent that was what most of them were thinking when they first saw me I am sure. After awhile though everything went back to normal and we were all warm and fuzzy! Except my brother who that day fell in the river down by Ace in the hole. We were downstream from the hole fishing off the ledge when he took a step closer to the middle and disappeared into the water! I never let him live that one down. lol

"you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post"

There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!

It's a shame that those folks on the Norfork treated you as they did. Such is the behavior that gets fly fishers categorized as snobs. Spinner and jig fisherman have the same rights to fish our rivers as fly fishers, no debate there.

There have been certain people in previous threads that have labeled me as the kind of fly fisher that looks down on spin-fisherman in general. That really couldn't be further from the truth, and I just want to be crystal clear about that. There maybe certain methods of fishing that I think are a little shady, but spin-fishing isn't one of them.

It is not a myth, rather it is a truth that is seen in only a few. Those few, however, have caused most fly fishermen to be mis-imaged as a snob.

OTF, you aren't a fly snob, you are one who is passionate about fly fishing. That is different than looking down at those who fish with a spinning or casting rod. I have largely quit fly fishing only to pick up a few more spinning rods to tackle the tasks at hand. I enjoy your input and hope to fish with you one day, but not for trout.

I got you. As I said, no offense taken at all. I just think that sometimes people get the wrong idea about fly fishers in general and I was just trying to clear that up a little.
