I just purchased some Inferno pepper spray...been running into some feral dogs lately. Has anyone ever had to use pepper spray on a canine or person before? Just wondering if its all it says it is...

I've used it on Brown Bears in Alaska and got a little taste of it from someone else that was trying to use it on a bear that was persuing him. It is some good stuff! I'd like to hear a little more about the ferrel hog problem. Been wanting to hunt them. If you could send me a PM with more details, Id love to go over that way and help reduce the population.

Ducky you must really be wanting to hunt them. You read dogs as hogs.

I would also be interested in hunting some too though. My AR needs some more rounds down the tube. :)

I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.

I've used pepper spray on dogs before. Worked great, full grown Rott was trying to attack my moms dog. THe dog took off like I shot him in the butt(minus the limping and bleeding). Should work well for you.

More of a hunt with hogs than a kill. They seem to either be nocturnal or really reclusive around here. Fellow worker has developed a problem with them on the Castor River, just recently developed wallows and signs of activity in a hay field and river bottom. They have been a problem for years on Corps lands at Lake Wappapello. Areas around the St Francois Mountains in Iron, Reynolds, Washington, and Ripley counties have problems also. MDC and Army Corps of Engineers track activity and will be more than helpful trying to find you some. I assume it will only be a matter of time before they invade the farm since it is in the middle of all of these areas. They do seem to stay close to lakes and rivers for some reason. Cousin saw one dead on the road outside of Ellington the other night on way to Jack's Fork.

Would be interesting to know what kind of pepper spray you were using.....Bear pepper spray is very different from the pepper spray used on people.

According the the Alaska DNR, people pepper spray (oleoresin capsicum - ONLY) will NOT stop a bear - you have to buy the stuff for bears - MUCH stronger.

Bear spray also has oleoresin capsicum PLUS other Capsaicin and related capsaicinoids. The active contents of bear spray are higher concentrations that people pepper spray.

I wonder if it is possible for bear pepper spray to permanently damage or even kill a feral dog?

Either way - if it truly a feral dog you have the right to protect yourself with firearm or pepper spray.

I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."

Indeed I have been sprayed with police grade pepper spray for training at work and I can tell you ...IT SUCKS WORSE THAN ANYTHING IN THE WORLD :donwan: It's worse than teargas. It should do wonders on dogs.

Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to

watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly

know everything there is to be known.

The stuff I used there was just regular pepper spray. It wasn't mine, It was my moms so I don't know the name brand of it, but I can find out here in a week or two if you would like. Only reason I had it was because we had a couple of neighbors who didn't believe in leashing there large dogs and I decided to take it with me, proved to be useful.

I wouldn't recommend regualar pepper spray if you think a bear encounter is likely. I've heard also that regular pepper spray is not effective.
