Water was supposed to be off at 10 pm last night and I wanted to see if I could catch some of those browns Duane got into the other night so I headed up about 10:30. Water not off. Darn!

I took my chuck-n-duck rod with me just in case and fished below #2 outlet. Broke off Duane's yellow egg in a tree right off (sorry DD). Tied on a olive pine squirrel and caught a couple of small rainbows. Foul hooked 3 browns just below 20 inches (disappointing). Met up with Leonard and we walked up to #1 to see if it was any better up there. Nope.

Tried back at #2 for a while before heading home about 2:00 am.

I guess may be they ran water because of the cold temps? Who knows.

Oh yea- Leonard showed me these little rainbow fry swimming along the edge of the water last night. All between 2 and 3 inches only. Dozens of them both at #1 and #2. I've asked Shane what he thought - hatchery escapees??? But I'm sure if they venture out into the lake they'd get eaten real quick. Might think of that when picking out a fly or lure.

We have only caught 3 small browns in the last 3 days. I did see quite a few larger browns cruising the Big Hole yesterday while the water was off during the day. One of them was in the 32 to 34 inch range. Also saw 4 or 5 big bows milling around the Big Hole over 25 inches. Fishing at night has been tougher than usual, but still fun. Ran into a guy that was bragging about and 8 pound brown that he had caught and released then asked if I wanted to see it. It was laying belly up over by the bank and had been there about an hour. It does not do much good to release a dead fish, so we finally talked him into taking it home. It was odd that he was so set on catch and release even though he was releasing a dead fish???? I'm glad he finally decided to take it home instead of completly wasting it.

I ran into this guy also. He belonged to the "catch and release club of north america" and had the bumper sticker to prove it. The fish more than likely ended up in the dumpster at the state park.

Jeeez, Phil... Could you have handled that Lil fry any harder? I'm surprised that fish made it after being surrounded by skin grease like that...

Response from hatchery personnel:

I believe this was due to the wind storm early in the week. A raceway screen became blocked overnight due to blown debris. The water level rose to where some fish could have easily escaped and entered Taney. This is unfortunate but rarely happens.
