No shut off at the street... No street !! Not in a subdivision. Water from a well.. I am told no individual shut offs at the wellhouse either.. (dont know why- dont really believe it.. I gotta look for my self someday).. Original homeowner told me the ONLY shut off he had installed was in the crawlspace. But thanks for teh suggestion.

In my subdivision, we have a water shut off valve about 3' down in the ground, down by our street. It's our main. Can you shut off there?

I know a couple trust worthy guys that live down there, but I would hate to post their number on a public forum without asking them first. They do all kinds of handy work, including maintenance.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. Perhaps in the spring !!!

Bring the Grand Kid down just don't tell him it is to crawl under the house to wrap the Main Water Pipe with the heater tape and insulation. Is it possible for you to build and access from inside the house like a trap door in the floor to gain easier access to the valve.

My thoughts exactly. When I gut that bathroom above the shut off, I will relocate the shut off closer to the wall so I can shut off the water with a tool from above. Is I get thru this winter, I will address it properly next summer.. Maybe even a valve OUTSIDE the house (like in new subdivisions), which I think would be best !

Thanks everyone for tolerating my paranoia over freezing pipes.. Before I left the house in November,I set the thermostat to 52 degrees & I put a digital thermometer in the crawlspace to record the low temps. The recorded lowest temp in the crawlspace over the winter was 43 degrees ! I was surprised.. I know it got down to single digits for a few nights.. It has to be some sort of natural geo-thermal thing. Maybe the same reason the lake does not freeze.

I still think that an external water main is the better way to go- so I will entertain that this season. But I can put my freezing pipes to rest & make more room for more important things to worry about. <_< Thanks !

A low of 43 degrees is amazing !!

Having the place stay at 52 degrees may have had something to do with the temps in the crawl space also. Good to know that setting it at 52 for the winter will keep things working for when you return.

We have a house at Shell Knob, that is used as a Summer cabin and on a very seldom time, we use it in the Winter.

We built it in 1981. It has a basement garage under 1 side and a crawl space under the other. We seal the vents in the Winter and leave the heat in the house at 55.

We shut off the water, but don't drain the pipes, and we have never had a problem in the last 30 yrs. Might be luck. I usually check the place out every couple of weeks.

Gosh, that is a long time. My how time flys. Brought back memories of building the place.

We did several years ago, on the pipes that were under the crawl space to one of the bathrooms, put that grey flexable pipe insulation on it. Only did it because we had it left over from building the New House. Did both hot and cold.

Most people I know use a thermastat light. When it get belows the set temp, the light comes on and the bulb heats up the air in the crawl space.

I did wrap the main supply pipe with heat tape & insulation. Dont know if it ever came on... Light is another good idea !
