dennis boatman Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Headed out to Capps tomorrow for the first time. I am assuming the usual nymphs and wooly buggers will do OK. Looked at the area on Google Earth, and it looks like I will start at the bridge and work my way down. A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Buzz Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Yes. I have great luck with anything olive, and you don't have to use very small bugs either. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
fishinwrench Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 I have no useful recommendations, but I'm looking forward to the trip report. Good luck, take pics.
Chris Barclay Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Capps is on my short list to try out. Looking forward to your report. Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
dennis boatman Posted November 26, 2010 Author Posted November 26, 2010 MY first trip to Capps was, well, so so. Did alot of looking around. Saw some nice water. Started up near the mill and fished down to the bridge. It was VERY windy and off and on rain, just a beautiful day. Casting was atrocious and visibility was limited. Nothing caught between the dam and bridge. Drove down to the "lower" bridge. Went downstream to the first riffle and caught nothing. Went upstream a couple of hundred of yards. Some nice water in that area, however nothing. I enjoy going to a new place to fish and try to figure it out. Conditions being as they were, and it being my first trip, I was somewhat dissapointed in the fishing. I will go back in a few weeks and give it another try. Hope the guys fishing in the "olliefest" have a great time and catch a few fish. I would think with the rain we had in the area, the water will be up some. Hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. ollie Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Oh yea, did we forget to tell you the wind down there is HELL! lol It can only be blowing 5 mph at my house, but I swear it is like 20 down there. That valley funnels all the wind down it. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Buzz Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Sorry you didn't have any luck Dennis. The fish are spread out a little bit now, but they are still in a few of the same spots as always. Last week I was fishing fairly deep, 3 ft. below the strike indicator, in the deeper holes. I had to deal with the wind too. I would just let it set and bounce in the waves and eventually they would bite. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
dennis boatman Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 I really did enjoy my day at capps. On my next visit, I will head downstream of the upper bridge first thing. Maybe I can go all the way to the other bridge and have my wife pick me up. Looks like that would be about one mile, and probably a lot of "walk-by" water. I am not much of a "strike indicator" fisherman, so I prefer some current. Is there any schedule to the stocking of the creek? I will have some opportunity in the next couple of weeks. I fish a lot of midges so I use an indicator most of the time. I'll strip a few streamers now and then, but I tend to do better on the midges fished along the bottom. I'll try to remember to let you know when they stock again. If you decide to go let me know and I can tell you a few places that always hold fish. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
dennis boatman Posted November 30, 2010 Author Posted November 30, 2010 Thanks. I really do look forward to going again in the next few weeks. A strike indicator is just a bobber...
