jjtroutbum Posted December 10, 2010 Author Posted December 10, 2010 1 for 1, then they asked for my e-mail add and I quit. Ya I am normally very careful about opening myself up to spam. However I weighed my options carefully and decided that Trout Unlimited is going to send me a few emails but there surely won't be anymore than say the NRA, my local fly fishing club, or my most consistent spammer Toys r us, followed by Walmart. Verdict for me was. "Much to do about nothing." Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. eric1978 Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 7/10...missed the char, sockeye, and insect water quality question...still fun. Thanks. Exactly the three I missed. Then they screwed up by telling me I know trout...what a crock. I understand trout about as well as I understand women.
Terry Beeson Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 ...I understand trout about as well as I understand women... No man understands women even THAT well... 80% for me... Don't take it too seriously. This was a marketing scheme for TU to get their name out more and maybe glean some members and/or donations. Nothing more. But it was kind of fun and interesting. Gavin Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Eric, just feel pleased that 2/3 of the questions we missed...pertained to char & salmon....not trout, LOL! Used to be a member of TU so I'm already on their list....they email me and send stuff all the time...but I'm not gonna give them a nickle, same with the FFF. Cheers.
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 My anti virus blocked it. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
flyfishmaster Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 6 of 10. I'll take that score. I don't much about char. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
ozark trout fisher Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 8 of 10. Missed the one about the Red Quill and the Bristol Bay salmon run. I'm a little flummoxed about the animosity against TU. They have been a veritable savior to colwater streams across the country. Trout fishing in America wouldn't be anything like what it is now without them. I'd say their one of the few special interest organizations around that has it about right.
Al Agnew Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 This answer to one of the questions is a little subjective I think. To use any sort of coloration/spots as part of a fish identification is usually not a solid basis. Spots/color can be dependant on water clairity, light conditions, environment etc. Take for instance the difference between a rainbow trout fresh out of the Neosho Fish Hatchery compared to the rainbow trout caught out of Crane Creek, or a largemouth caught out of a muddy pond vs a clear creek. There is a very visible difference, but it is the same species. Fish ID is generally based on things like fin to body length ratio, presence or absence of adipose fins, number of scales counted on the lateral line, mouth location and shape, etc. I guessed on some of the bug ID, founding of TU, and number of Salmon. 6/10 I was a little leary of providing the e-mail address, hopefully this was not a spammer of some sort. The questions seemed legit for trout that a run of the mill scammer wouldn't do. I disagree...while you're right that coloration depends upon a lot of factors, those factors can't change light spots to dark ones. One difference between char and trout really is that trout have dark spots on a lighter background, char have light spots on a darker background. I got nine of ten...missed on the imago/subimago one. Guessed on the number of sockeyes and got it right. I was pretty sure of my answer on the others. Comes from having a mind that retains a lot of useless facts, though, since I don't think the ability to catch trout is enhanced much by knowing the answers to any of those questions.
Fly_Guy Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 6/10, with a couple of guesses on top of it. Teaching BIO 122 lab helped on the water quality one - we did a stream team lab. It said I know trout, but I think they're crazy.
