Guest Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Folks, I would like to change the shape of the grip on my favorite rod. How difficult is it to do? Anybody in Tulsa I can talk to?
Dutch Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 A little more info would be helpful, like what type of rod, what the grip material is made of, and how you want to modify it. There are lots of mods you can do.
Gavin Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Grip replacements & modifications are pretty easy if you have the right type of lathe....not so easy if you dont. What do you have, and what do you want done? Tom Hargrove can do whatever you want...but he's in St. Louis...www.thargrove.com
jdmidwest Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Surely you are talking about a cork grip, if so some sandpaper will customize it to fit. If you are wanting to replace the grip, it will be more involved, the adhesives used to attach the original grip to the rod may be hard to remove. More info is needed. Guest Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 i thought i may be in over my head with this grip issue. it's a scott rod with a cigar grip. a friend of mine has a grip he made when he built his rod. i want the cigar shape but with no taper toward the back of the grip. it would like the grip to remain the same size all the way back to the reel seat. cork grip for sure. no lathe. not sure how to replace or shape a grip. any suggestions are appreciated.
jdmidwest Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 You should be able to shape it with sandpaper. It is not that hard, just like sanding down a piece of soft wood. After you get the desired shape, go to a finer grit and finish it all off smooth. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
