flytyer57 Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 What type of hair or synthetic do you tie? Bucktail, craft fur... There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
ollie Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 maribou, chenille, yarn, dubbing, hackle and many other things! "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Mitch f Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Rabbit Strips, Schlappen hackle... I've heard good things about the toughness of Schlappen, I also like the Rumpf polar fibers "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Al Agnew Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I find that rabbit strips are about the easiest and quickest material for me to tie, so I use a lot of rabbit, both zonked and cross cut. I just tried some cross cut mink which looks pretty nice...shorter fur than the rabbit. And I use red squirrel strips as well. I'll force myself to use marabou quite a bit, too. And I use bucktail when tying my spinnerbait, but seldom use it otherwise. Never got into using the craft hair. Right now I'm having a heck of a time trying to find rabbit that's the shade of brown I want.

Gavin Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Hareline does allot of rabbit...if you want a bar-dyed McLeans does that...Wapsi too....Might try looking on the distributor sites to find a color you like, then order it in through Hargrove or some of the big catalog outfits like Feather Craft or Bob Marriot's....sometimes stuff just isnt available at the distributor level.........Guess you can always dye your own....buy some tanned rabbit, and some RIT and play with it. Cheers.
zipstick Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 In a pinch take some brown yarn from a cloth store, cut into lengths and comb it out gently to make a purty dern good hair jig. Caught some good ones on them this week. If there's fish to be caught where you cast and work the small jig slowly, I don't think there's too much difference in the hair or fur. Most guys just use too much bulk in the jigs they use in cold water.

I like using artic fox, rabbit, and marabou. I've kinda been trying to find a synthetic replacement though...I hate to see the little critters lose their life just for my fishing habit. I guess I'm getting softer with age! "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
