Chief Grey Bear Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 This is my 2000th post to OAF. A very proud day for me. Excuse me while I dry my tear. ...........................Thankyou. It was a John Boehner moment. I did a little research the other day when again Capp's was in the news because another visitor couldn't catch a large number of fish and he wanted to change the management from White Ribbon to Blue under the assumption that it would inflate his numbers. So I was curious as to the total milage of each. Blue by far out scored with over 60 miles to Whites barley 40 miles. They were both equal with I think it was 10 areas. Just food for thought. It was a John Boehner moment. LOL! I didn't think it would be possible to find a more ridiculous character than Botox-face to pound the gavel, but I'm pretty sure the Tan Man takes the Carrot Cake! My lip is quivering. I say double up the stockers in the parks, and turn all the rest into Blue Ribbon and let more fish get bigger, smarter and prettier. That's as much finger energy as I'll waste on this tired old debate.

ozark trout fisher Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I say double up the stockers in the parks No offense or anything Eric, but if you don't think there more than enough trout in the parks already you are not looking and/or fishing hard enough. I will not get into the Blue vs. White Ribbon thing again. I think it has been hashed over in several multipage threads already.
Outside Bend Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 If a stream can support a quality wild trout population, it ought to be considered for wild trout regulations, regardless of how many miles of stream are already under wild trout regulations. Any number of Missouri streams will support trout long enough for the catch & keep crowd to have their fun, while only a small number of streams have the habitat conditions to support self-sustaining trout populations. <{{{><
eric1978 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 No offense or anything Eric, but if you don't think there more than enough trout in the parks already you are not looking and/or fishing hard enough. I don't really fish the parks...I just want the meat eaters to have plenty of fish to keep so they don't complain that they can't keep them from other places, and also so they keep buying their stamps to support the trout programs.
fishinwrench Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 while only a small number of streams have the habitat conditions to support self-sustaining trout populations. After all the years of chasing trout here in MO. and reading everything I come across about "trout" in general.... I STILL don't know what "proper habitat" consists of. What exactly is it that most cold-water Missouri rivers and Spring creeks are lacking ?
rps Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 "What exactly is it that most cold-water Missouri rivers and Spring creeks are lacking?" 1. Wilderness. The more we (the species) try to control the habitat, the less it resembles the natural habitat that promotes variety of size, variety of species, and variety of opportunity. 2. Wilderness Once any stream or lake is managed through limits, harvest ratios, and stocking, we create a never ending feedback loop that contains numerous "unintended consequences." 3. Wilderness If the public has access, what we can count on is that the public will piss in it, litter it, and take more than their share. Count our blessings for what we do have, lobby for intelligent choices where they may exist, and forget about fishing in a place your great grandfather would have wanted to fish. He probably would have kept everything for the traditional picture anyway.
fishinwrench Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Ok, let me ask that question in a different way... What does Crane, NFOW, Lil'Piney, and the Eleven Point have that allows a reasonable amount of natural reproduction, that other streams such as the Niangua, Capps, and Current (for example) do not. What exactly do trout require in order to sucessfully complete a spawn ?

Fair enough.
