duckydoty Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Not a fishing report, because I have not done much fishing since duck season started. But, I have been out on the lake. The Lower End, a place you would not normally find me....unless it's duck season, is where I have been. The duck hunting has been phenominal on the Lower end this year. I have been hunting out of a canoe and putting in at Rockaway Beach. The best locations that I have found are about two miles down (East) from Rockaway. Yes, I've been paddling down there in the dark 3 days a week for over a month now. Getting to know that stretch very well. On two different occasions I have seen Trumpeter Swans land down there almost in front of Rockaway Beach. I have not seen them in a couple of weeks though, so they may have moved on. Last week was great because all the surrounding ponds and lakes had frozen over along with all the smaller coves on Lake Taneycomo forcing all the ducks and geese to stay on the main lake. Picked up two banded geese that were banded in Iowa this season. Hopefully we are getting some migrating geese instead of the Branson Landing Residents only. Those geese taste like cheetos???? The gadwall population is very good on the lower end right now. One flock that hangs out down there numbers close to 500. Mallards are a little tougher to come by. Although I did get 3 green heads today. A few mergansers are haning out and some shovelers. Only one week left in the season. If you get a chance get out and give it a try. I have also been getting some good reports from Bull Shoals on the duck hunting. Beaver Creek area has been producing pretty good. The South Side of the Lake right across from Beaver has been holding some good ducks. Last year I mostly hunted Table Rock, but with the water so low I have not had much luck. Only got a limit one day. I still hunt Table Rock one day a week, more so, just to be outside than to be getting ducks. Sorry I have not been very active on here lately.....as you can see...I've been real busy duck hunting!!!! This one is this morning another shot of this mornings limit last week just before my limit and then the limit My Brother and Nephew came down for some action The canoe trip down the lake in the dark More Taney pictures from this season And some Table Rock pictures from this season I'm in heaven....been eating duck poppers and duck stir fry just about everyday for 6 weeks now!!!! MMMMM!!!!!GOOD!!!!!! A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Quillback Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 That's some fine hunting you are getting into! Not a duck hunter myself, but there are plenty of them in and around Bella Vista right now, hundreds if not thousands of geese and I saw a couple of hundred mallards on one of the lakes a couple of days ago. Sadly they can't be hunted here, the geese need to be thinned out considerably.
Bird Watcher Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Epic Grey duck beat down. Way to go. Nice Can too.

MMMMM!!!!!GOOD!!!!!! Just curious how you prepare the Geese for eating. I know seemingly only the breast meat is really worth keeping but the last time it tried even that I wasnt worth the effort of cleaning the geese. I do have access to geese often but it seems senseless to kill (OPPS: I MEAN HARVEST THEM) unless I can utilize the meat. I hope I haven't opened a can of worms 0r geese here. Thom Harvengt
vacation Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 What a great report..I have hunted table rock last year a couple times with moderate success, but am always leary about the homes around the lake when I shoot; otherwise lower taneycomo is perfect!!

The geese are my favorite when prepared properly. I use a special marinade that is 2 parts mountain dew, 1 part soy sauce, 1 part worstchesire (sp?) and some sirachi hot sauce. Slice the breast thinly. I normally get 18 slices out of each breast. Marinate over night. Wrap the slices of breast around slivers of fresh jalepeno peppers and string cheese. Wrap all of this with 1/2 of a slice of Bacon and secure with a tooth pick. Cook on a very hot grill till the cheese starts to melt out the ends. Do not over cook. The legs and thighs are ground up and turned into breakfast sausage. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Thom Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Thanks DD I will try this and forward it to my grandson who harvests geese all winter. Their family's diet is mostly wild game and he is becomeing a great chef. Thom Harvengt

WOW, That makes me want to go kill a goose. Even though I haven't hunted waterfowl in 20 years! Real men go propless!

Think I'll take the Browning over to the neighborhood pond tonight. No one will be out in this snow!
