Blue Springs Creek - Fishing Report

Recommended Posts

Me and Cuzn J head down to Blue Springs Creek on Sunday Jan 23. This was J's first trip so I was hoping there would not be too many people. And my wish came true, we did not see any other fishermen. We parked at the Red Gate and walked in. The water temp was an even 50 degrees, the outside temp was around 25 degrees. The water was gin clear but it was an over cast day.

We walked to our first hole and we were on fish right away. J landed two before I even got started. The fish were not that spooky today. We catch multiple fish out of every spot that looked "Fishy". We catch fish all day long, nothing over 7" but it was fun!

In the second photo, the belly of this fish was very orange/rust colored. Do these fish retain this color for life or does it fade out?

We double rigged all day and did not change flies very often. Here is a list of flies that were catching most fish: Dark Tan Scud, Green Scud, Rubber Leg Hare's Ear and Mercury Pheasant Tail.

FYI: If anybody goes to the Red Gate in the next day or so, could you see if a Black Glove is on the ground. If it is, I would really like it back.

Finally, as we were walking up stream I kept looking for a line or sign indicating not to trespass on the Camp. I did not see anything and before we knew it we were right behind a fence of a baseball field. So where is the actual line?

Can't wait to go back,

My Brother and I were down there Sunday just scouting around. I think we saw your car blue and white Explorer with Illinois plates as I can remember. We went down to the next access. Those are some nice pics hopefully those little ones grow up. We don't have much experience down there how big do the trout get? Most of the ones I've seen are in the 8-10 inch range.

Nice report. I was down there for the first time in 13 years on MLK Day and only got a few in the 3 hours i fished. Got 'em on a BH hare's ear and a soft hackle under a dry. I'm planning on heading down Saturday (29th) for a few hours. Hopefully I'll have better luck.

Sounds like fun...I think the Conservation land extends for about a half mile above the Hwy N bridge and its about a mile up to Camp Mihaska...You can pull a map for Blue Spring Conservation Area off the MDC website...or view it in Google Earth with the MDC Google Earth patch. The trout run small for the most part...4-8" maybe...but there are bigger ones in hard to reach places.Cheers.

Adamg,

Yes, that was my vehicle that you saw at the gate. As for as the size of fish, we did see some in the 8" range but only a few in very calm holes or when we would spook them out.

The majority of the fish are about 4-5" range and they are hard to see, because they stay glued to the rocks.

Remember when you go down next time fish in the fast current, there are a lot of fish in these spots.

I was down today and looked for you glove. No luck.

I also think the cutoff for the public/private land is the hole with the double falls.

So...how did it fish?

There is no limit to what a man can do or how far he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit
