mic Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I was wondering if the Conservation Department ever makes any stream improvements to the Blue Ribbon Creeks. For example, there are a lot of empty holes that could use some bank covers on Blue Spring Creeks and some sections could really use some rip rap. I was fishing the first hole below Hwy N on BSC on Friday and could hear the dirt falling from the bank into the creek.
jdmidwest Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Why don't you try to contact the area office where you are concerned about. I doubt if they would use rip rap, maybe willows or cedar. Local stream teams do stuff like too. MDC Contact page "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
eric1978 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 The number for the MDC Ozark Region office is (417) 256-7161. I can't remember the agent's name who's in charge of the fisheries, but he's very helpful and informative.
flytyer57 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Get involved with your local TU and maybe they can manage some stream restoration. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Outside Bend Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I know they've done some willow plantings and other stream remediation on Mill Creek in Bohegan CA. You may want to get in touch with mid-MO TU, a number of MDC guys go to those meetings, and they're pretty active & in touch with MDC happenings. <{{{><
ozark trout fisher Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I have long thought that Little Piney would be a good candidate for stream restoration. It's suffered so badly from gravel mining that it just doesn't have much depth and cover any more... It could sure use some lunker structures, and other habitat work similar to what they did at Mill Creek. It's a good wild trout stream now, but it could be so much better. But I'm not sure how well that would work come to think of it. It floods massively every single spring and most falls too. I bet that any stream improvements wouldn't last a year. And what in the bloody heck is that avatar Outside Bend?
FishinCricket Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 And what in the bloody heck is that avatar Outside Bend? Why, I do believe that is Dr Teeth, keyboard player for the Electric Mayhem! (it's a Jim Henson thing) cricket.c21.com
Outside Bend Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I'm not sure if Little Piney would be MDC's or Forest Service's jurisdiction, as far as habitat improvements are concerned. But I agree it'd be nice to see something done to provide better trout habitat there. OTF- I was bored with brown trout, so I went with Dr. Teeth <{{{><
jdmidwest Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 OB is probably right, NFS since it is in the National Forestry System. But the local MDC will probably steer you in the right direction. mic Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Get involved with your local TU and maybe they can manage some stream restoration. I'm in Illinois, but I wouldn't mind supporting the local TU. Is there a single chapter for Southern Missouri? If yes, does anyone have their link?
