Thom Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 People act like it has never snowed before. We made a trip to Wal Mart last night because sloppy joe tonight! I made it to work just fine in the AWD Commander with the 1-2 inches of sleet we have received in Springfield and out here in Nixa. [/quote) Just a suggestion for us who are blessed with all of the warmth and comfort of our blessing today:This is the first blizzard alert ever in this area and already the highways are virurally unpassable except for necessary employees. In the nursing home were I volunteer in St. Peters the RN's and CNA's are packing blankets and beds to stay the night. Unfortunately CNA's and cafetera workers cant affort an expensive 4 wheeler at a $ 7.50 / hr. wage. They are on the job though with the help of volunteers and a emergency plan put in place by their administrater. The street in front of the faciiliy was pretty well unpassable with a compact car and most regular vehicles at their quitting time last night and the night staff came in early to help. The residents there need someone to care for them so the workers are even taking their children with them and given day care through tomorrow. The streets off the main highways where they live are impassable. MODot is now three wide on 40 and 70 and plowing and on the trips back finding large amts of snow.\ Just suggesting a little prayer and understanding for those less fortunate might be more appropriate than sarcasm and chest thumping about our good fortune. Even at this stage less than half way through the second largest storm in the this area in the history of record keeping and will be the largest storm in Missouri when done.. I hope they are wrong but so far in some areas though not all they were not. Thom Harvengt
Trout Commander Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Still just rain on NFoW. Hope we don't get up to the inch of ice that is possible. Jason, don't let the wife get out in the beamer! She is on strict orders not to! However it should do fine in the flat country of Springfield. I test it out in the parking lot when I get home (read: there will be sliding and snow flying) Here is the latest in Nixa: I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
Outside Bend Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Just checked- about seven inches of snow in the backyard here in Columbia, visibility about 200 yards as I look out the window. The dog's loving it. I'm ready for spring- maybe I'll check out some seed catalogs for this year's garden. Stupid me forgot to get beer when I was at the grocery store last, but I do have about half a bottle of Woodford to keep me warm Stay safe out there guys. <{{{><
Trout Commander Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I am sorry if this is how you took my post. This is not at all how it was intended. There was sarcasm, but it was meant for the people that go out and buy a months worth of food for a weeks worth of bad weather. Don't most folks keep atleast a few days worth of food in the pantry/fridge/freezer??? By all means if you don't HAVE to get out don't. And for the record, I am the only source of income for my three person family, who receives no "assistance", at $12.00/hr, which is considerably less than two folks working at minimum wage. The only debt we have is a manageable payment on said AWD Commander. I suspect those that aren't prepared with a four wheel drive while living in an area where it is sometimes required either 1)don't want one or 2) their budget looks very different than that of my family. (Yes NOW I am thumping my chest, about my family living within our means and making smart financial sacrifices. If you want to fault me for that, be my guest.) But that is neither here nor there. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
flytyer57 Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 People please. You're all acting like you never saw any snow and ice in your lives before. At least it will all melt in a couple of days and every thing will be back to normal. Get over it. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

TC If more folks would have the wise common sense that you and your family have there would be more 12 buck an hour jobs to be had. Sorry if I overreacted to your comments.one of the ladies that worked for me last year has not been able to find a job form more than 8 bucks and hour and her husb and who has a degree has been laid off from 3 jobs since last september. They are both hard worker and trying hard. That being said Congrats on your success and fine family. I worked for 39 years and retired in 1999 and we had the same philosophy. I was fortunate enough to never have to ask for help from anyone. Keep us the good work pal we need more responsiblle families like yours. BTW with already 7 + inches of snow in Columbia over 3/4 inches of ice under it in some places .... it will be longer than a few days before this snow in gone in Missouri. The tempertatures for the next two days alone are predicting -4 degrees ane 0 degrees. I doubt if much snow will melt with those temps. Columbia is filled with hills and narrow streets and several college campuses that are all closed. Thom Harvengt

What are the daytime highs supposed to be? By the weekend, it will be in the 30's and ice and snow melt then. Columbia is filled with hills and narrow streets and several college campuses that are all closed. So are a lot of other places but they don't all close. I'm sure when you used to work, you made it in when there was bad weather. I've already driven to work when there were reports of up to 18" of snow forecasted and we got it plus. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Buzz Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I went in to work this morning because I knew I could make it. They shut the plant down and sent us all home at 10:30 AM. It took me 1 hour to drive about 12 miles and then the truck got stuck in the snow drifts. Luckily a forum member/fishing buddy helped tow me off the road and then gave me a ride home.I finally got home at about 12:30 PM. My truck is stting in a neighbors driveway about 1 1/2 miles from my house. I haven't measured how much snow we have, but I estimate it to be about 12" to 14". It's hard to tell with the drifts. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.

Don't worry about it Buzz according to one of our weather experts on the forum it will all be melted and gone in a couple of days. Couple meaning 2 I guess unless the new math has changed that. Of course now snow and ice melts at 30 degrees not 32 also. Global warming you know. That 14 inches at the bottom will all be gone by thursday evening. I think I will head out to Busch wildlife cause I think that ice will be all gone on the lake by Saturday. 4 days of 30 degrees should take of that. Thom Harvengt

Maybe you should lay off the Busch instead of heading out for more. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
