Gavin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Most access points have plenty of floater parking...and break-ins arent very common..the NPS rangers usually keep pretty good tabs on the parking areas. Cell coverage is usually spotty down there. ATT & Sprint get signal on top of some of the hills...but thats often a 1/4 mile hike up some steep vertical and hardly worth the bother. Both rivers will flood, particularly the upper section of the Jack's, but they are narrow headwater streams and they drop quickly. Pick a gravel bar with an escape route if its raining hard, dont camp on islands. There are a few restaurants and some small grocery stores in the population centers but nothing outstanding. Pack it in if you want to eat like a King. Cheers.
Gavin Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Another concern is water level...the park service will close the river to floaters due to flooding at times...The Current is usually closed if the level is over 4.0' at Akers Ferry...The Jack's is closed if its over 5.3' at Alley Spring. Check water levels here, look under the White River Drainage: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/mo/nwis/current/?type=flow Additional closure and park guidelines can be found in the Superintendant's Compendium, here. http://www.nps.gov/ozar/parkmgmt/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&PageID=177459
Members padlnjones Posted February 10, 2011 Author Members Posted February 10, 2011 I just want to thank everyone for his advice and counsel. I am reading and digesting all your replies...I am sorry I didn't mention before that we wont be doing that much fishing, probably just where we stop for lunch or to camp. It's mostly for the wilderness paddling and canoe camping. I knew this group would have a lot of expertise regarding the river. Much appreciated. We did a 7 day trip last fall on the San Juan River in Southern Utah that was outstanding in every way, highly recommended. I am sure to have more questions after we refine the plan somewhat....
Justin Spencer Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Not fishing? Probably can cover alot more water depending on your paddling habits then.
