I agree the fund from power generation are a logical source for these funds (although it's not clear to me the Corps collects any of that). If the dams are a cash cow you can be sure there are people lined up to collect who will be hopping mad if their financial ox gets gored. To get any money out of the COE, you'd have to sue them and the people paying the higher electric bills may not feel especially happy to take on that burden.

Apparently the COE doesn't directly receive any revenue from the hydro-power, it goes to the Southwestern Power Administration, a division of the US Dept of Energy. They in turn market the energy and sell it to electric companies throughout the region. Either way, it's still federally owned at the production stage, and funding for the federal cold-water stocking program shouldn't be on the chopping block since they decided to ruin one of the best natural warm-water fisheries in the country.

Interesting thread. You should advocate directly for the hatcheries here if you're leaning that way, Dano. Plenty of good reasons to do so and it's certainly the most direct route toward keeping trout densities high.

Do you think people should join Friends of Norfork Hatchery?

Tim I think it's a good group to align with. Davy Wotton is the President and he sure has the rivers at heart I do know. There is another organization that has been very active for conservation issues on the White and Norfork along with keeping their eyes on gravel mining, hazardous waste spills and other environmental issues on warm water creeks. Its call Friends of the White and Norfork rivers. Both of these groups are good stewards of the Ozark streams. Here's the other link:

Someone know if there is a bill about this when the dams were constructed or if there is a contract out there that says the hatcheries are to provide stockings. It would seem that this might be a contracts issue, and if so I would be interested in doing some research on this topic. Just hit me up with a PM.

I don't care if it's the Corps of Engineers or SPA (Southwest Power Authority) the mitigation should be part of their cost of doing business! It would be pennies! If they were an oil Refinery you would have them shut-down!......Ralph
